Queensland hit with severe thunderstorm as Sunshine Coast girl fights for life after lightning strike
23 hours ago
A child is in hospital after being struck by lightning on the Sunshine Coast, as Queensland battles wild weather.
Queensland Ambulance Service on Saturday afternoon confirmed a 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition at Sunshine Coast University Hospital after being injured in a storm while at a private address in Beerwah.
Strongest winds since 1946
The wild weather continues after powerful storms ripped through south-east Queensland overnight, damaging homes and overturning light aircraft.
Heavy rain, large hail and record-breaking winds up to 169 kph were felt at Archerfield Airport, in Brisbane's south, where nine planes were damaged.
Prior to this storm, the previous record at Archerfield was 143 kph, back in December of 1946.
While some private hangars had their doors damaged, there's no structural damage to the airport and it's now operating as normal.
