Giant hailstones wanted from your backyard for research to improve weather warnings across Australia

This 14cm hailstone from a storm in Yalboroo, north Queensland in 2021 is one of the largest ever recorded in Australia. (ABC: Dan Battley)

Heavy hailstorms have wreaked havoc across Australia this summer.

But if you're unlucky enough to have giant hailstones end up in your yard, scientists hope you won't just take photos to post on social media but will preserve the icy lumps for research.

The largest hailstones I have seen here in mobile Alabama were about the size of clementines or mandarin oranges few / some years ago

One day last summer I heard a tink tink tink noise hitting the window at work and it was tiny hailstones

5C (42F), foggy drizzly - this is incredibly mild for here this time of year. And I am loving it!

Alas back to reality this weekend though, a return to below freezing temps and likely snow 😟

Only 148 days till May 24th, our unofficial start of ‘summer’ (even though it’s still chilly then).

The month of May may have high temps in the 90’s here in mobile Alabama

I always say summer begins in May also

So everyone wanted in the coop last night. Even the ones that would rather be in the tree.
