We call these bands of snow coming off the lake ‘streamers’. They can move around with wind direction or sit over an area and put down lots of snow.

Did I mention I really dislike winter - cold and snow?

Normally wouldn’t have snow squalls this time of year, but the lakes are not frozen over - it’s been too warm for them to freeze. When the lakes freeze, the wind moving over the lakes cannot pick up moisture to drop as snow.
