I'm with ya! 3 F @ 4 AM now at 8:30 AM 6 F. High of 18 predicted. Whoopdee damn doo dah.

It was -11F (-24C) this morning when I brought warm water out to the coop. The coop temperature was 0F (-18C) which is the lowest this winter. One of the hens had laid a late egg yesterday and it was frozen solid and split overnight. Our high this afternoon will be 6F (-15C).

I cannot believe this weather, yes we get these evil cold temps but then it moderates, it usually never last longer than a few days to a week. Then warms up, rinse and repeat all winter.

And now the Great Lakes have froze over to a large extent which means that the ‘warmer’ waters which help to moderate the temperatures here is no longer effective at ‘warming’ up that arctic air as it flies south ward.

Of course on the upside it also means that the lake effect snow squalls are also cut off.

But with all the snow AND the lakes froze over this means that any solar loading that normally occurs to warm things up will be mostly ineffective - all that snow will just reflect that solar radiation back into the atmosphere.

Now we will have to wait for ‘warm’ air from the west and south to move in and help displace the cold air. A nice strong warm wind, known as a snow eater out west (chinook winds), is what we need here in the eastern part of the continent.

I fear that the eastern part of this continent will be cold well into March.

Painfully cold on the cheeks and fingers this morning doing chores. Even with my scarf and gloves and mittens on. Thankfully I have awesome winter boots good to -70C! Best $275 I ever spent!

-25C (-13F) and sunny. Forecast high of -13C (9F). There was absolutely no wind when I went to the barn this morning, checked for northern lights - nope none on display. Just as well, way too cold to sit and watch them!
