That's just awful! Have they ever been this bad before?

They haven't been this bad since I've owned chickens. I spoke to someone yeaterday who lost a large flock of RIR pullets to them a few years ago.
The rooster has been putting his girls to bed early.
Apparently the gnats do not like to go inside the coop or dark places. I've put rolled screen (like windows screens) over 2 sides of the runs and tarps over the other to darken them. It seems to help.
