Households across NSW told to reduce electricity usage tonight as temperatures soar​

Households across New South Wales have been asked to reduce their electricity usage this evening, as a heatwave strains the state's power supply.

Temperatures are expected to peak at 40 degrees Celsius in parts of Sydney today, which the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) said would cause a spike in electricity demand between 5pm and 9pm this evening.

NSW Energy Minister Penny Sharpe said the government had enacted a Government Energy Action Response Protocol, which involved agencies and major utilities minimising energy use.

The minister also called for households to defer non-essential electricity consumption.

"Every small bit of action that we take will make it much easier to make sure that the grid stays on and there's not a problem," Ms Sharpe said.

I live in Central Texas it's in the 50's and overcast. I have a question regarding winterizing for my flock. Two of my chicks/rooster are tame and I picked them up at the end of the day and put them in their coop until they learned to put themselves up. But I have 4 others (3 chickens/1 rooster) that are semi-feral, I cannot catch them. I feed them and plenty of access to water and natural shelters. A few times when they were all in another chicken run with coop that I had, I'd lock them in for several days hoping they'd make it their home like my other two did in another coop. But no deal, these guys roost on a bar above a gate entrance to my back yard. Fine in the summer (except I have to constantly clean under them!) but I worry about the winter! I hate to keep them cooped up 24/7 even with a run. I like that all my chickens are free range during the day. When it gets colder, will they naturally head for shelter? Any suggestions? All I can think of is when it gets REAL cold to keep a constant look out and grab them before they are frozen.

I would like to think they'll seek better roosting in cold wind. If not, use a head light with red, green, or very dim white light and they'll be easy to grab after dark.
