Be careful what you wish for.
I definitely don't want an ice storm, which is what we tend to get here (freezing rain, followed by 3 or 4 inches of sleet, then a dusting of snow). -just like to see temps in the 30s/40s. I love cold and snow :) -not 80 mph winds and ice, though!

60 at 9:24, and supposed to reach 70 later today.

Cairns rental crisis means 'nowhere to go' for flood victims as some consider leaving town

Kaliff Villaflor sleeps on a drab mattress on the filthy floor of his carport, exposed to the elements and surrounded by his broken, flood-ravaged home in the Cairns suburb of Holloways Beach.

"The bugs get a bit annoying at night but I don't want to leave the house with all our possessions like this … and there's so much work to do," the 32-year-old father said.

He and his family are among hundreds of far north Queenslanders facing homelessness and displacement this Christmas after ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper brought severe flooding to the region.

The Queensland Department of Housing is on the ground assisting those displaced and said as at December 21 it had received requests for emergency housing to support 119 adults and 53 children.

There are 440 places of emergency accommodation available, according to the department.

The future is even more uncertain for those whose homes had been destroyed beyond repair.

As Mr Villaflor waited for his partner and little girl to return home from a holiday, he said he had no idea where they would live.

"I'm not living here with my daughter, that's for sure. So we're going to have to find somewhere," he said.

But a rental crisis in Cairns meant there were barely any houses on the market to accommodate those with homes deemed unlivable, said local real estate agents.
