Brisbane breaks decades-old weather record as consistently high overnight temperatures surpass 60th consecutive evening

South-east Queensland has endured a sweltering summer, with overnight temptretures forecast to remain high for another month. (ABC News: Gemma Ferguson)
The record books have been smashed in Brisbane this morning, with the mercury failing to fall below 20 degrees Celsius for the 60th night in a row.
Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Pieter Claassen said New Year's Eve was the last time the temperature had cooled to below 20C in the Queensland capital — when it dropped to 19.9.
"And it is going to get worse before it gets better" he said.
"For the next seven nights, the low will continue to hover around 20 degrees."
Ms Claassen said the previous record was set in 1978 when temperatures stayed above 20C for 59 consecutive days.
"I think a lot of people recognise the fact it has been a long, hot summer so far and — particularly
humidity-wise — levels have been very, very high," he said.
My best friend moved to Brisbane in 1988; it took her more than 14yrs to acclimate. Each winter her and hubby would be in the kitchen while the kids begged to have the heating on in the loungeroom lol. Hubby would have the car aircon on ahead of time so her make-up wouldn't melt during the dash from the house to the car!
