THIRTY.

The one in the photo is a bark scorpion, the smallest and most dangerous. They sting defensively three times in rapid succession: zzt!zzt!zzt!

The pain is incredible and can cause permanent, very painful nerve damage. I know someone who was stung when she picked up an outside water bowl for her dog to refill it. A bark scorpion fell off the bowl onto her foot and stung her.

She said the pain went all the way up her leg into her back. Ten years later she still had pain. She had had five kids and said the pain from that sting was worse than childbirth.

It can also kill you. The venom causes muscle spasms, angioedema, abdominal cramping, chest tightness, nausea and vomiting, blacking out, shortness of breath, urticaria, wheezing, and anaphylactic shock.

Scorpions get inside the house through cracks in masonry, vents, drains, or hitch a ride on pets, Amazon packages, your shoes, etc.

They start moving around when the temp goes above 70F and they are very active during the Hell Months.

It is amazing the places they get into. I once found a dead one inside a Platypus water bladder that I had stored in a closet with my hiking gear.

We have to check everything. Always makes me think of this Far Side cartoon:

I will laugh because The Far Side. Otherwise I am screaming in terror like a little girl.

I don't know if we have a different bark scorpion, but I've been stung. It wasn't pleasant. I couldn't wear a shoe for at least a week. It required a doctor's visit, but I didn't kick the bucket.
We do have two bark varieties, a striped bark and a yellow bark, so maybe there are more. We have another kind that I can't remember the name of at the moment.
My cat kills a lot of them. I always worry she will get stung, but so far so good.
