Manns Beach high tides and dangerous surf put Gippsland towns on alert
16 hours ago
By Bec Symons and Fiona Broom
It took just six minutes for the tiny town of Manns Beach in eastern Victoria to be inundated with water and authorities say it could happen again this weekend.
About 12 houses had the abnormally high tide running through them, and most sheds had their contents destroyed.
A drowning cat was freed from underneath a house and has been in hiding since, while remnants of firewood piles are scattered throughout the streets.
Nearby, Wilson's Promontory recorded wind gusts of up to 154 kilometres that night.
This is the highest tide the community has witnessed, but some have seen smaller surges in 2018 and 1980.
But with more wild weather on the way, they're bracing for the possibility of it happening again.
Brian Friend had just finished renovating his period-style home and his new Axminster carpet bore the brunt of the tide.
"We've just bought new beds, new appliances, new everything and it's all had it now," Mr Friend said.
Winds shook the house, also causing paintings to crash on the floor.
The warning for high tides will remain in place until Monday and the Bureau of Meteorology told the ABC it's "a good chance" low-lying towns like Manns Beach could be inundated again.
