3" of snow followed by ice and now it's just cold. At least two trees snapped off (we thought it unwise to go walking around in this to look, that's what we can see from the house). There are a lot of branches down but the buildings are all OK. It's now 19F and dropping fast so the trees will be coated for a while. Worried that the wind is supposed to blow. These droopy limbs don't need any more stress.

Power was only out for 3 hours here today, hopefully our luck holds.

Beautiful picture ... but a scary situation. Staying indoors sounds like a solid plan for now!

Still happening here. In our beautiful forested area, please God hold the trees up.

Oh no, I hate freezing rain, it took down so many trees last April, thousands and thousands of trees, and power lines. My sister and Niece were almost 2 weeks without power from April's ice storm here.

Hopefully the freezing rain won't last long

Oh gosh - I hope no further accretion and no wind. You are smart to not walk around those trees, they snap and come crashing down so fast. Be safe and hope your power stays on.

We're hovering at about 18F at the moment, but temps are expected to go down to single digits for the night. The weatherman says we got almost five inches, but there was that much sitting on top of my porch railing, so I know we got more! The snow's been a fine, misty powder all day and so dense the coop was blurry from the house. It's settled into a nasty mix of fine snow and sleet for now. It's supposed to stop shortly, but I'll believe it when I see it. It still looks like it means business!
Schools are called for tomorrow with a "promise" to let us now each afternoon about the next day. To be honest, I don't expect them to open at all this week. Even if they do, no parent in their right mind will let a kid stand at a bus stop in these temps (most highs below 20F,) especially when buses are likely to be delayed. Looks like I'll have the week off without pay. Hip, Hip, Hooray ... NOT!

6C, feels like -4 (43 / 25F). Wind's dropped down to 20mph with gusts up to 30, and not due to pick back up until tomorrow night, which is a welcome break. Still grey and wet but at least the rain doesn't hurt at 20-30mph.

The wind can really cause so much trouble, rain or snow - it's all made worse with wind.

Currently -15F (5F) still, light blowing snow, I would say we have around 10cm (5") on the ground, with the blowing snow it's hard to tell. The coming week offers more crazy frigid temps - I really really hate winter.

Oh and still have a 'yellow snow' warning - guess that means 'don't eat yellow snow' at least in my book!!!!

I LOVE the snow! It just doesn't generally come around here with such bitter temps. The whole point of getting snow was so the kids (even the big kids) would be able to play in it. That's not likely to happen with highs in the mid-teens and lows into the negatives. That almost never happens around here ... like, not in nearly 50 years!
Every kid deserves that childhood memory - and so far, this is the first generation here that hasn't had it since my great-grandmother's time. It's kinda sad, really and IMO it really stinks.
So Yes, I still want that one big snow for the littles ... even if it's not this one!

EDIT to Add: 18 F translates to nearly -8C. The lows are set to down as far as -19C. Y'all may be accustomed to that Up North, but we're not equipped to handle that, here - in body or soul!

It is going to be 35C today and 37C tomorrow. My chickens are already wings out and open mouth breathing. I had a bucket of water ready so when they start to close their eyes, they will be dipped into the bucket.

Can you set up a mister or give them a shallow pan of water (with ice) to stand in? I've used ice water in a hog feeding pan when our temps got to the high 90's (like your 35-37C.) I only had to dip one hen to show them and they used it for a solid week. I took it out when the temps dropped. It might be worth a try.

That's a good idea. We keep a freezer full of tubs of blocks of ice for our flock during the hot months. Most of them jump right on when we set them down. The effect is immediate: the wings relax and the beaks close. They stand in the ice water as it melts. When it has completely turned back into water, we swap it out for another ice block. It's a lot of work but it's also very effective. I wish it were as easy to cool a coop and run as it is to heat them.
