Having grown up in West Virginia, in a hunting community, I ate a lot of stuff. Squirrel, bear, groundhog, pheasant, etc. More recently, we enjoy the baby octopus appetizer at our fave Japanese restaurant (You eat 'em whole, they are tiny). Craziest was one night in Ridgewood, Queens. We had recently bought a house and were fixing it up. Late in the evening we were hungry and strolled down the street looking for a restaurant. We saw a tiny little place and went in. There was no menu, but the proprietor came over and said he would bring us something good. We had a brothy soup, and then he came over with a little plate with what looked like little fried meat balls on it. He wouldn't tell us what it was, he wanted us to guess. We guessed liver and other stuff, but then he told us it was brains. After paying, on our way out, we looked back and noticed the name of the place-Dracula's Hot Grill! Spooky!

Squirrel, coon, oppossum, frog legs, calf fries (of course,) armidillo (some folks think its nasty to even touch 'em, but I'm still livin!,) squab, scrapples, turtles, and rattlers are staples around here, and the few times we have to shoot a horse cuz it broke its leg, we eat that to. Waste not, want not. When I'm at my Uncles, we eat pickled squid, gator, emu, and one time, we ate a peacock, but that wasn't no good. Maybe it was just cooked wrong, but none of us liked it.

When I was in China:

sand worms (taste and feel like plastic)

a tiny song bird (very tasty!)

turtle-shell jello (black and tasteless)

There was a dog resturant near my apartment - I could smell it, but no way would I eat that (willingly)

It dpends upon what you mean by "weird". As I read through this thread I kept thinking, "oh yeah, I've had that... and that... and that...". Here's my list of what other might call "weird":

In the USA:
octopus
squid
alligator
sea urchin
squid ink
moose
buffalo
jellyfish
sushi of all kinds
escargot

In France:
tripe (probably my least fav "food" ever)
pigeon
sea snails with mayonnaise (soooo good)
foie gras
homemade frog legs - very tasty!

ETA things you've mentioned as weird but hadn't occured to me:
reindeer summer sausage
poi
skate (type of fish)
seaweed

I try to stay away from "unique" foods. I'm just not very adventurous with what I eat. I stick with what I know I'll like, especially if I'm paying for it, so that I don't waste money throwing it away.

Probably the weirdest things I've eaten are buffalo and poi (a traditional Hawai'ian food).

You guys crack me up!!!

--I want to try brains and eggs--but I am afraid of mad cow. I did have a hamburger au cheval (horsemeat to you and me) so I am sorry if this thread offends anyone...

I don't know what calf fries are??? And I am way too timid for blowfish...Maybe I'll go reread Of Mice and Men...or maybe find some Hemingway hmh....reminds me of the tropics and curried goat...or at least I think it was goat.

Either I am a throughly modern maven--or too earthy...if there is such a thing...put me on Survivor--Ill show 'em.

It's funny to me... Since I live in Alaska, reindeer and moose is common...but there is some that just don't like it. I thing it has to be prepared right. My grand father used to get reindeer every year, and had it made into the best sausage. My little bro and I coundn't stay out of it. As for any type of fish, we used to have to eat it a lot when we were kids, to the point where it's just not that good to me any more. Maybe on special occasions.

the weirdest thing I've eaten...herring eggs. And I'll never do it again

The reindeer we ate was sausage too. Very tasty, but slightly pink. I kept thinking, I'm eating Rudolph's nose....

Were the herrings eggs in brine like caviar? I forgot to mention caviar. I love caviar!!!
