What's up with this chick??

I just hatched out 20 Marans chicks on mothers day. They are supposed to be Blue and Black copper Marans and possibly Splash but this little guy hatched out and it doesn't look splash but buff or red or something I don't understand...Its from my own flock and there are no other roosters and I only hatched marans eggs...Anyone have any idea?

How long have you had your breeding stock?

Not very long, it was my first hatch from my own stock. When I do another hatch and another one like this appears I'll know someone down there is carrying some wierd unknown gene. If not maybe its just a fluke lol either way its still very cute and I'm excited to see what it turns into!

If I remember correctly from my poultry class, I think a hen can keep a rooster sperm viable in her for up to 2 weeks for continued fertilization. So if this was a recently added hen she still might have fertilized eggs from another rooster.

I thought about that but the only other rooster that was with them was a blue cochin and I made sure to wait at least three weeks after he was seperated to collect the eggs. Its like the black sheep in the crowd, Oh well its still neat

I have heard of the "mutant white" gene in black copper marans maybe its like a "mutant buff" or something lol
