I have a 2 and a half month old rooster and it did something interesting yesterday. I have never seen or heard of this before. My rooster tried to mate with my month and a half old chick. He grabbed the chick's neck and tried to do the deed. I don't know why he would do this. When do roosters usually start mating? I have a rooster that is about 5 months and he hasn't done that yet. The other chick was a silkie and is soooo much smaller than the rooster. None of my other roosters that are also 2 and a half months of age have done anything like that either. Does anyone know of anything else like this happening? Does anyone have any idea of why he did that or if it is normal?

Sexual behavior can occur at any time with male chicks when the hormone levels are a bit higher than usual. It's sort of like the cart getting ahead of the horse, but it doesn't really mean anything.

Last summer, I had a Golden Cuckoo Marans crow at six weeks and he attempted to mate his brooder mate at age ten weeks. He went on to mature in the normal fashion. The precocious behavior didn't escalate his development. It's just something that happens from time to time.
