What's Your Chickens names and Why are they named that?

I have 28 chickens and 5 ducks....all ranging from 5-8 weeks old. I don't have names for everyone yet but here's what I have so far:

My favorite (and the only one with a real backstory to his name) is a roo named Captain Koch (pronounced "Cook")....as far as we can tell he is a Japanese Bantam roo, about 5 weeks old, and he's got the most personality of all the chickens. We just love the way he struts around the run with his tail up and his chest puffed out. He acts very proud of himself.
Hubby and I used to drive a truck together, and we hauled a lot of chicken. Down south, we'd always pick up chicken from Koch Foods, Inc, whose logo looks like this (hope it's OK to post!):

On our 1st load from Koch when I saw their logo on the bill of lading, I commented to hubby, "Gosh, that sure is one PROUD chicken, especially considering he's probably next in line to be made into nuggets." Hubby thought it was very admirable that a chicken would be SO proud to be made into food....and the conversation just got sillier & sillier the whole time we were waiting to be loaded. Became an inside joke between us. LOL. From then on, Koch foods was known to us the "Proud Chicken Place" whenever we went there.

Well, our Captain Koch looks very much like the "Proud Chicken" from Koch Foods

....Hubby pointed it out the last time he was home from the road and I agreed! Our Captain Koch isn't going to be made into nuggets anytime soon....but he's still proud of himself. His name (as pronounced- Cap'n Cook) is also a nod to one of our favorite TV shows- Breaking Bad- but that's not really what we named him after.

Then there are Timmy and Gobbles....named after Timmy from South Park & his "special needs" pet turkey, Gobbles. Gobbles is a black sex-link with curled toes (I posted a thread about her)....we think she's going to be just fine, she's just a little "special". Timmy is an EE with a much more mild form of curled-toe than Gobbles, only one foot seems to have it.

Featherfoot is a 5 week old bantam buff Cochin (we think)....hardly a creative name for a Cochin, but it's what I've been calling her since I bought her, and it stuck.

There are 12 red sex-links I can't tell apart- so I've taken to calling them all "Henrietta"....until I have a better way to determine who's who. And there are 3 white Leghorns that came from the same bin at TSC, who are collectively referred to as "The White Chicks". Oh, and for my token un-PC chicken, we have an EE pullet who grew a big bushy "beard" so we've named her "Saddam"....hubby wanted to call her Osama bin Chicken but I had to draw the line somewhere.

All 5 of my ducks have names:
Big Jim is my big male Rouen duck, after a wild Mallard my grandpa befriended when I was a kid.
Martin Penwald is a female Rouen, named after the "Rubber Duck" character in the movie Convoy (played by Kris Kristofferson)...Martin Penwald was the character's "real" name in the movie
smile.png

Dcuk (pronounced "du-kuck") is the other female Rouen, after this little wooden bamboo duck I bought in Oregon made by The Duck Company (Google it- they're awesome).
My two Cayuga ducks are "Rotella" and "BP".....sorry, but I just couldn't help myself...we'd already planned to name them both after motor oil brands, and then the BP disaster struck. For those who haven't seen a Cayuga duck, google it....they are black with a green iridescent sheen that looks (to me) like they're coated in oil. Neat looking but odd at the same time

Hemera = EE pullet. named after greek mythology personification of day. because she's such a bright girl.

Tahjo= Modern Game pullet. named in korean for ostrich. since when she was a chick she stood like an ostrich. (or so we felt since we didn't know what breed she was)

Iwa= Barred Rock Pullet. japanese word for rock....hahah creative?

Poe= Japanese Bantam cockerel. named after edgar allen poe the writer and poet. since as a chick my brother felt he looked like a baby raven and he was constantly crying...reminded us of the poem..

Karma= Coturnix roo. i had two roos and this little one was getting bothered by the bigger one. my dad moved him to another coop but forgot to lock up the original coturnix coop. my husky (who i guess learned during a period of 5 hours how to unlatch a door) killed my entire flock of coturnix including the offending roo. this little one is the only one that survived because he was in another coop. i felt he would feel like it was karma?

i need names for 3 silkie.. help~ one white hen, one splash hen, and one beautifully sweet black roo

Extra Crispy, Original & Grilled: Splash Marans pullets. They were never intended for dinner, I just couldn't think of normal names! :lol
Copper: big French Black Copper Marans roo
Zippy: black silkies, zipped out of her shell in 2 minutes!
Speedy: same as zippy, but a mutt roo destined for the stew pot
Noel: cuckoo silkie roo hatched on x-mas eve
Frank: cuckoo silkie pullet. She had a huge vaulted skull when hatched and the kids thought she looked like frankenstein!
Millie: Mille fluer d'uccle roo (half of millie vanillie. Vanillie was a porcelin d'uccle pullet but she died shortly after we bought her. shipping stress I think)
Rush, Runner & Hurry: button quail that ran around like bugs when they were just a few weeks old.
Snowball: white sizzle
Quackers: duck
Hershey: khaki campbell duck
Splashy: call duck
Comet: golden comet pullet
Muffs: Arcauna pullet with huge muffs!

The rest of the crew have boring names! lol

Sadly, we're down to all 'roos now, but we have:

Walter (Cronkite) - boss rooster of the coop, he's a Partridge Chantecler and looks rather stern. Very pretty bird!

Ted (Koppel) - not as pretty as Walter, but Ted's a nice looking bird (another "Chanty") in his own right. Or will be, once his head feathers start growing back in again. Poor guy...lol

Our Dark Brahmas are:

Spike - was paired as a chick with Bob who, sadly, is no longer with us. Big beautiful guy!

Little Wing - named after the Jimi Hendrix song

Jimmy (Page) - named after Led Zeppelin's legendary guitarist. Jimmy's our youngest, and is an up-and-comer!
smile.png

Our girlies who have passed on were named:

Henny Penny - our sweet little Dark Brahma girl...we're not sure why we gave her this name, but it stuck. She was older than our Chanteclers by several weeks, and was very matronly.

Mary - named after the Jimi Hendrix song, was another Brahma girl. She passed away from her injuries when she went out on the road and got glanced by a car.

Gracie - our sweet little Cayuga girl, who died of her injuries after a fox attack. We were so hoping she would recover..sigh..

Red - one of our two Chantecler hens who were killed by a weasel recently, she was named for the feathers on her neck.

Goldie - the second Chantecler hen, who had more blonde feathers on her....sweet little girlie.

We have one Cayuga drake, and his two girls, but we haven't picked names for them yet. I feel bad about it, but nothing's really come to mind yet...

I love this topic. I love to name animals. I tend to go with human names for animals, I think it is fun, and there are so many great names out there.

Summer - B.O.~ love the name, and she is sweet and buff in color- sunny if you will
Grace- things she's a SLW or sex link~ my son called her Gray Foot, which I changed to Grace Gray Foot - cause I wanted 'human' names
smile.png

Pearl - SLW? ~I've always liked the name Pearl for an animal
Alli Mae- ?not sure breed - she's large and brown ~ My daughter called her Alvin because she looked chipmunk like as a fluffy chick - but I need there names to be 'pretty'
Novella - ? she's big and brown ~ I'm inspired by Urban Farmer Novella Carpenter, so I named her in honor of her.
Jasmine (Jassy) - Polish Hen (black with white) ~ I knew/know a great young person with that name and have always like that name. She's a sweet bird, and she's a sweet person.
Thanks, these are fun to read!

I wanted to update my post of 5-30-10, # 106. On June 2, We added 2 more Hens to the flock. My daughter named them Mandy & Monica. Mandy is the best friend of Miley Cyrus in real life( you can see from the earlier post we have a white leghorn Miley) & Monica is named after Monica Gayle who is the female news anchor at Fox 2 news in Detroit. The 2 new hens are Silver Lace Wyandottes.

I love our chicks! Their names are:

Sophia and Chloë - Black Australorps - I just think they're cool names. Sophia is MY pet chicken. She hops up on me and I can pat her to sleep. She's the softest and sweetest thing ever. She's my best peep. I love her.

Abigail and Rebekah - Golden Laced Wyandottes - named after two of our great nieces who are named after women in the Bible. Abigail is another one of my peeps.

Tess - Dominque - my DH named her. She was the runt for the longest time. Another one of my peeps.

Bubbles - Salmon Faverolle - Named by two of our great nieces ('Giggles' and 'Jillybean') because they wanted a chick with that name. And it fits her both looks- and personality-wise. I was originally going to name her Anneliese. She is awesome and super duper friendly. She's now the runt. Another one of my peeps.

Stu - Cuckoo Marans - the free exotic chick from McMurray. Since he's a rooster, he's going to freezer camp if we can't rehome him so his name is a variation on 'stew'. He's such a chicken! Apparently he didn't get the word yet that he's a rooster. Anyone want him?

Roza - NH Red - Roza is Russian for red. I went to Russia so I thought it was a neat connection. I originally thought she was a rooster. Woops!

Sammy - NH Red Rooster - another freebie from McMurray. Since he's a rooster, we weren't going to keep him so he got a food name too (a spin on sandwich ('sammich' is how DH says it to be funny)). I actually think we'll keep him - he likes me and so far does his job as a rooster. He's the more outgoing/dominant rooster of the bunch.

Wyatt - NH Red Rooster - another one of my peeps. Seriously hoping Wyatt and Sammy get along so I can keep them both. I liked both Jackson and Wyatt for a boy name and DH picked Wyatt from these two. I originally thought he was a hen. Roza and Wyatt had to switch names to match their genders.

I have two Cayuga ducks as well - Kiera and Gabrielle. Kiera means dark/black and DH named Gabrielle. We sometimes call Gabrielle 'Gabby' cause she's such a Chatty Cathy and gabby. They are both very much mamma's girls. I love them too.

I looked up baby names on the web, wrote down a whole bunch I liked, reviewed it with DH then came up with these.

My Ameracana roo has rusty colors in his feathers so we call him "Rusty" - We are treating a hen for Bumble foot so we have named her "Miss Bumble" - and our brown hen that is more petite built than the others we call "Miss Henny Penny".
The other girls haven't gottne names yet.

Our hens are named ... Golden fleece -she looks like a cross between an EE and a pheasant. Gorgeous golden and black barred feathers
Matilda-was Morticia when we got her, black and very aloof.
Snowball, aka Marshmallow, aka Growler- White (obviously) and growls when she sees a hawk or eagle circling to warn the others
Blondie- blonde and very sweet.
Spackle Butt- Grey body with black specks
Road runner- Long legs long neck and can she ever run fast-(meep meep)
six babies ................... Three black - coal, soot and boot polish (for now)
Three red sussex-(look like chipmunks right now) Alvina, Theodora, Simone'.

We have Snowball the Roosterfriend, a White Cochin bantam, and Andromeda but we all call her Andi.. She's an EE..
We had an epidemic in our flock and lost all but these two. We took care of the problem, but too late.
So the rest we have are adolescents.
There is... Winter. She is a Splash mix of who knows what. She's a mutt.
Smudge who turns out to be a rooster.
Spark who is suspected to be a rooster.
Princess a white crested blue polish.
Bandit a silver-laced wyandotte hen.
Summer an appropriately named Welsummer.
Dot is an EE.
And Stripe, who is also an EE. xD
