Mine tried too. Failed. All of them.
Not all of mine did. They flew the 80 feet.

I did have this one hen, that she tried, but she went down like a plane coming in for a landing. She literally slide in the snow a foot or two before coming to a stop. She was sooo close. :lau

Poor hen. She has been caught in the “white, mysterious cold, dangerous looking stuff”

I live in northern Minnesota. My chickens will not leave their coop when there is snow on the ground in the chicken run. They self-confine themselves to their coop for about 4-5 months out of the year.

I knew this was a possibility before I even got my birds. So, I designed their coop to have almost 8 square feet per bird, about twice the normally recommended size of a coop. They basically live in the coop all winter.

Towards spring, when it warms up a bit but there is still snow on the ground, I will sprinkle a layer of leaves on top of the snow and then they will go outside and walk on the leaves - just up to the point of the snow line. I keep some bags of leaves in storage just for that. But we still have lots on winter ahead of us where I live, so it will be until about March before I take out the bags of leaves.
