Well about a butchering, I have silkies. You can't really eat silkies because they are small and have all black skin and bones. I'm not just going to kill it to give me room.
It is extremely common for people selling animals to sell in pairs. If that is the way they sell, that's it. You can always ask, some will, some won't. If you don't want the pair move on to the next seller. I sell pet supplies at flea markets, and know what it is like to deal with buyers. I have a set price and will not come down on it in most cases. I had to buy the items, get them to the market and pack back up. I have rent to pay and a profit to make. I know that there is a difference selling live animals over goods. No one is forcing you to buy that(or those) birds.
lol I know you can kill and eat any chicken but they wouldnt taste good. I think asians like eating them but I think they are bigger there. Im Caucasian
This early spring I actually gave away around 11 or 14 pq silkie males. The people that came and picked them up were latino, so im sure they were eaten. But I don't mind that, im just not going to eat a silkie.
I have a funny story about eating silkies. Well I was selling some pq ones and the people that were coming over were Latino. I told my mom that they are gonna eat em! She said no they not you can't eat silkies. My mom is pretty ignorant LOL Anyways, when the Latinos came over, my mom was like " yeah the silkies are beautiful. Ummm soo what do y'all plan on doin with em?" the Latino lady said "WE EAT EM!" My mom had a mini heart attack. All of our mouths dropped. The lady quickly said that she was joking and that she knows mainly Asian people eat them and she just needed some silkies for her lonely roo. She went on to tell us stories about her keets and chicks. It was all pretty funny!
If you want the hen bad enough to take a rooster, I guess you get stuck with a roo. I wouldn't do it unless I needed a roo. We try to give our roos away and have a hard time doing that. Couldn't imagine trying to force people to buy them. In a free market you can do whatever you want though. Buyer beware.

You're not forced of course. Not unless you want a specific breed and you have to have it that second and the guy selling the pair has the only chicken you want. I would just move on and figure the guy could have sold me a chicken if he didn't insist I buy the rooster with it. His loss not mine. Free market works both ways.
I'm with Sundown on this one. I'm not forcing anyone to buy my pairs. I never have trouble getting rid of my pairs as pairs. If someone wants just pullets there are other people out there that sell just pullets. I sell pairs and am happy to sell only to people that want roosters too. Extra hens do get sold individually, but only to people that have already purchased pairs from me. When I have extra roos, my farmer neighbor takes them and sells them to the local ethnic population for me. No one is forced to do anything.
For a buyer to INSIST that I sell them only hens would be like me insisting that Walmart sell me only half of a six pack of Coke. "But I only want 3! It's not my problem that you have included extra Cokes in the package. I should get exactly what I want!!"
