I'm going on my 6 year of working with wheaten but still a newby. I have 10 or 12 roosters and 11 hens. always love to hear from somebody knowledgeable.have u been breeding wheaten marans long ?
Hi there! I've only had my Wheatens since last year, though goodness knows I've been trying for a while! I'm now hatching out my own Wheaten Marans for the first time and I see now I have got a lot of work to do. I think the person I bought some of my stock from may have crossed them to Welsummers at some point because a number of them have some kind of pattern gene going on. My breeding goals for this year are to get better type in my flock. I love seeing the pictures of your birds because they look nice and solid while some of mine are too light bodied. I like the Wheaten color best so I'll just be working with that variety. Since the Marans seem to have such great personalities as a matter of course, I'm focusing on these three things: Type, then production (I'd like to get a fair number of eggs and good meat production), then feather color. Maybe in a couple of years I'll be at the point where I can get the feather color part closer to the standard.
