Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I'm going on my 6 year of working with wheaten but still a newby. I have 10 or 12 roosters and 11 hens. always love to hear from somebody knowledgeable.have u been breeding wheaten marans long ?

Hi there! I've only had my Wheatens since last year, though goodness knows I've been trying for a while! I'm now hatching out my own Wheaten Marans for the first time and I see now I have got a lot of work to do. I think the person I bought some of my stock from may have crossed them to Welsummers at some point because a number of them have some kind of pattern gene going on. My breeding goals for this year are to get better type in my flock. I love seeing the pictures of your birds because they look nice and solid while some of mine are too light bodied. I like the Wheaten color best so I'll just be working with that variety. Since the Marans seem to have such great personalities as a matter of course, I'm focusing on these three things: Type, then production (I'd like to get a fair number of eggs and good meat production), then feather color. Maybe in a couple of years I'll be at the point where I can get the feather color part closer to the standard. :)

Randy, Have you noticed that the Standard that was recently approved is different than what everyone thought was going to be approved. To get SOP young the matings will have to be made up different. If you would like to discuss this willing to help. Don

id love to. I guess we have to have a separate line of roo and hens to get anything decent looking is that what you mean don?

Randy, will see if I can get someone that knows how to bring the new Wheaten standard over to this thread. I have to run to the lumber yard and will be back later. Don

it is so nice to meet somebody close by spotted breast are not a good thing. the pictures my sister took yesterday don't exactly represent my flock I have a few days at roosters but all of them have a little bit of whites in their feathers. I have only got 1 rooster in the past 6 years the didn't have any white the trouble is he was recesivve yellow leg I managed to cull the hen and roo that caused it. i hope i dont need a seperatline for roo and hens. my hens have started laying like crazy but i wont start incub. im so glad to meet a neighborator til next week. I'm in virginia on a regular basis so if there's anything I can do to help you don't hesitate to ask

Okay, I've been reading the SOP and thought I'd come in for some ideas on where I should concentrate improvements in the coming years.... This is an older photo. Some of these females I've retired...but please give me some tips regarding our basic flock.....I'll try to get some more pics when the weather warms up.....and when it dries a little bit. With the last onslaught of wet weather, it's all I can do to feed and water without falling down, don't want to bring the camera for a tumble!

and here's another view

The second shows the females better. Thanks in advance for your helpful thoughts....
