Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I've already found my neighbor's pack of JRTs to be a bother. I'm going to fence them out of the paddock I am putting the chickens in. Darn little pests. Coons, yeah, they were a bother in TN at night.
We've seen a lot of fox here, hoping JRT. Proof is fox proof. We're going to net over most of a paddock got them so they can range it and retreat from hawks, when needed. I have one chicken killer old dog, but I am used to keeping him out. It is hotter and more humid here. I'll build with more summer air circulation in mind. I needed the reminder. Thanks.
I probably won't join the associate until I have a settled couple of pens. Right now I am looking at them as pretty layers and my zen happy place. Once I get all set up, then I join stuff when I have something worth, well, crowing about, literally. Right now I just want Wheaton fixes, and to meet a couple of breeds I haven't dealt with while I sort my predator problem and find a house to buy. Leasing so sucks.

You may know this or not, but foxes can climb 6' fences and JRT can't.

so nice to see people interested in wheaten. mine are very friendly to people but hate outher breeds and new chickens. they live to free range and starting to venture over 100 yards frim coop and if i could only get them to go into my fenced in orchard ( small orchard 30 trees yellow raspberries and lots of grapes) id be a happy camper. so nice that theres more people interested. there for a long time it was just me and don and Vc.

And me too! Got the eggs going in the bator now! Thanks again!!

Most people know that coons can climb, but they don't know that foxes can. I can tell you from experience that they can still climb with one of their front legs gone and they can do it with a 5# bird in their mouth. My fence is 6'.

that's because grey fox aree in the cat family and thats why british only hunt red fox with dogs the grey climb trees
. thats what ive always been told

We supposedly have both varieties out here, but all I've ever seen is the red fox. Beautiful, but as they say, cunning. Best way to keep the predators out is good fencing. My run has a buried 2' apron covered in gravel all around. I have hardware cloth that goes up 4', and overlapping that is 4' welded wire. The whole run has the top enclosed in the welded wire as well. On top of all that, I used to run (need to charge my battery!), two strands of electric fence around the whole perimeter. Had one coyote attempt to get into the run only once. I heard him SCREAM at about 5:45am, ran to the kitchen window to see him high-tailin' it to the treeline! After him, I trapped one young coon in my trap, but so far, that's been it. The Cooper's Hawks come by frequently, but they are more after the feral kittens that my barn cats drop helter skelter than anything. They aren't big enough to tangle with the Marans roos! One of my Marans roos actually fended off a Cooper the other day from feasting on some kittens. The roo was puffed up twice his size, and growling, and standing between the hawk and the kittens. Like them or not, those are HIS kittens buddy, and you're not getting one! Who knew??
