The way I see that, if they can't breed on their own, they aren't very good for much in the first place. I'm sure no one helped them breed centuries ago, so how is it that so many breeds now need our help? It's because of breeding practices for more beef, more feathers, more pretty, but the function seems to have flown the coop! THEY ARE CHICKENS! They should be able to do what chickens do, on their own! Same with many breeds of mammals, and I don't need any of them that can't reproduce on their own. Just my opinion, but I don't have the time, nor the inclination to help them do what should come naturally.

Well I bet Randy's six year old Rooster was doing fine 3-4 years ago when Randy was using a really nice rooster that carried yellow leg gene, so now Randy has to make do with what he's got unless he brings in outside stock which he reluctant to do.

Well, everyone was probably doing better 3 or 4 years ago.

I'm not sure I get what you are saying though? I know he is reluctant to bring in new blood, and I sure don't blame him, it is hard to predict exactly what new and different problems you are going to acquire when you do. Like the old saying goes; better to dance with the devil you know...

Hi Randy,

Have you considered trying artificial insemination?

first of all eww! lol just jokeing. i go along with debbi thoughts on that one i wont do the breeding for them also i never bread the rooster carring recessive yellow but one or two times and i knew the hen carring one copy of the recessive gene. so im lucky i didnt get to far down the line. i hope to never bring in new blood. i know the faults mine carry i have alot of new roosters now and by alot i mean 6+ give or take a few so my hopes are to get one with little white in coveerts and hopefully no white feather in wing hiddem wham wing in closed of corse. i have alot of years working with my closed flock of davis roo over budy henery( cottage hill) lines but im a nube still learning almost six yeara now but i never wanna sound like im a pro or know more than outhers so some breeders are using artificial insemination more power to him . is my opinion I'm just a very small fish in the big c. my plans have always been to have 10 or 12 hens in a couple of roostersi have room for hundreds but would rather have qulity over quantity

See, that is why I asked about getting one of Ron's line, that would not be a total outcross for you. Evidently, there are still a few folks that maintain a closed flock of the old Cottage Hills line. With my BCMs, I have 3 that are a Presley/Jeane cross, and those are my best birds. Hang in there, in another few months, your little boys should be coming into their own. What are they now, like 3 months old? Just out of curiousity, how old are your hens? Seems to me the one chick I hatched came from what looked like a pullet egg?
