Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

When it's really hot like it was last week, I like to let my chickens loose so they can seek shelter in the hedgerow. Unfortunately, I can't do that while I'm at work because our neighbor's dog "slips the chain" as the owner puts it and comes down to my house to kill birds. That blasted dog has killed over a dozen of my birds and my neighbor has never paid me for any of them despite us asking for compensation. The dog was loose again this morning. I saw it running amok towards the end of the driveway. It had come down to our house and ripped up the trash as well as our closest neighbor's cans. Thankfully it didn't dig into the the chicken runs this time. People who keep a dog chained up all the time, never train or vaccinate it, then act all "well gosh darn" when it gets loose shouldn't be allowed to have one.
That one should be shot. I believe if your flock is in jepordy you can lawfully shoot the dog. I know I shot the neighbors dog on our back porch, where he came to get at the chicks. The wife took the 100 dead chicks to the neighbors to show them why their dog died. She had the gun on hand and offered to kill their other one, who had made it home before we could kill it. They promised to keep the dog home from then on & you know what they have. Another time another place this time in a neighborhood. Our neighbors shitzu made a morning trek to our front yard daily when they let it out the front door to crap in our yard. I asked them nicely on several occassions to let the dog into their backyard instead. They didn't have any level of concern until I started picking up their dogs mess each morning with a shovel and depositing it on their front porch. Within three days .... problem solved. And he was a local policeman.

next time take the dog to the dog pound . I know it's not the dogs fault but it's not the chickens fault either. I wear a kimber 1911 45 caliber pistol. and I will shoot any dog that kills my chickens
we have a leash laws even out in the country I will fire a few warning shots but after that I will shoot to kill . I'm sorry if I sound hardd and cold

every one, is it shoot, shovel, shutup?
Shoot, Shovel, Shutup. Rogue dogs out here don't stand a chance if they are killing or harassing livestock, and that includes chickens! It is not only a written law, it is the unwritten country law that all out here understand! If it is just a first time offense of harassment, the neighbor may get a warning, second time, they won't find poochy coming home for dinner...period! Sorry if this sounds too violent for some of the city chicken folks; but if you've ever had to come home to gutted lambs, pigs, and goat kids, all from the doings of two neighbor dogs, well then you might understand better. It happened quite a few years ago, but it won't happen here again, I promise!

Wish I had been carrying my .380 yesterday was attacked by a groundhog, sigh, who is today being tested for rabies since it bit two dogs and me. Stupid thing. Mauled by a jumped up gopher on steroids is just ridiculous. SSS for dogs and other varmints is just how you have to handle it.

I'm just glad it wasn't a rabid cow. I don't think I would ever live that down. Lol.

Wow, I never heard of a groundhog (woodchuck) getting rabies! Hope yours doesn't have it! If it was a female, she was probably protecting her babies. The ones I have here are quick to run when they hear or see me or the dog. Out here, bats, coons, and skunks are the main carriers of rabies. Let us know how you fare!

It was mostly just a scratch. Here's hoping for no shots! I looked on the Internet, yup rabid groundhog attacks happen. It's just ridiculous but happens. Coons, possums, bats, foxes, bobcat, horses. Just about any critter exposed can pick it up. Deer too. Didn't look like it was lactating, but harder to tell w rodents. I couldn't find a set close to the fence line either. I'll leash my varmint dog and see if I can find it. If there's babies he can find em. I can send em to wildlife rehab.
