Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

In my other thread, Bangarang64 said, "the first two are pullets, but they look very red for Wheatens. Could you post a few more pictures of them ?" and hdowden said, "to me their coloring seems off :/ but i havent really seen wheaten marans their color looks more of a buff than wheaten but again it might just be me".
I didn't know what you guys meant at first, but having read more of this thread I totally get it now and agree. I think I even have a young rooster who is very much a buff, almost no black on him at all.
Might some of these still be a good start do you guys think? How do you go about getting that out of the line, just cull the more buff cockerels and pullets? I am mostly interested in eggs I have to admit, but I want don't see any sense in letting my little flock go to any old type- I don't exactly sell chickens much, and don't plan to show- but when I have a cull, I'd still like them to be desirable to folks, so I do want to get them reasonably to standard.

I did find that some of my boys do have those cinnamon wing edges, berkeleysprings, is that what you mean by the 'triangle'?

Thanks for any advice guys, count me for one who REALLY wants to hear constructive criticism on these! Don't be shy, I'll put up more pictures when they've grown a little more and I'm ready to pick keepers.

Hi I have been reading this thread for several weeks now and I would like to assume that this chick is a girl. It is 1 week old. I haven't seen the black in the wings like other male examples I have seen. I would like to know anyone's opinion on gender according to the feathers.

ok so i have a odd question. im no farmer by any means but i planted potatos this year and i wondered how i use a few that i grew for seed potatos this fall in my green house ?
i'm no farmer either, but i had some potato's that i had bought to eat earlier in the year, well , my husband and i don't eat potato's that much so they started sprouting from the eyes, so he took them and cut them into squares with the eyes and sprouts, planted them, hilled them and this last sat. dug up the nicest potato's, so maybe if you can take some of them and put them into a dark place, like under the cabinet, they might start sprouting, then you could use them in the green house. don't know if this helps, but i tried to anyway

Will they keep putting out seed potatoes? You might try cutting them up and replanting again, couldn't hurt. I'd cut them up so that each piece has at least an eye then maybe replant them.
When you say used them for seed potatoes, does that mean that they made a bunch of small potatoes that you planted later? I haven't tried growing potatoes yet, but I'm curious!

Hey guys I think that I may have unknowingly inherited a Marans chick. I ordered 15 Blue laced Red Wynadotte chicks that I have had for about 3 weeks now, but one of them is for sure not a BLRW. I think that it may be a Marans due to the feathered legs. I uploaded an album under my profile with todays date 07/15/2012. There is about 5 or 6 pictures of the chick in question on there. Since you all are the Marans experts would you mind to take a look and tell me if you think that is what I have. I think that the person I purchased my chicks from also raises French blues and Black Coppers and may have included one by mistake. If you think that is what it is could you tell me what color it may be? Thanks for your help on the Wheaten Marans the other week. I was able to find some eggs from the Cottage hill line coming to me from Georgia. Pardon the pictures they aren't the greatest some of the feathers on him/her???? were wet and the pictures don't do justice to how cute the chick is.
From what I can see of your pics of this chick, it looks to me like a mix. It is a blue, but Blue Coppers or Blue Marans won't have that yellow feathering on the underside like yours does. Just guessing, but I think the breeder may have a fence jumping roo!
