Does anybody know anything about Marans of MS, or the quality of their Marans? I have the eggshell that the chick hatched from, it looks to be of decent color. I would say at least a 7. The BYCer that I got the chick from said the seller mentioned that the eggs were a bit lighter than normal due to it being later in the season... we'll see if that proves true when this little one starts laying.

Because it is a girl. There's no possible way it's a little cockerel. NOpe.

New Wheaten Marans eggs just went into the bator today. They are so pretty I had to share. These are new bloodline eggs & I hope for a great hatch!

I just have to say, I am very skeptical when people say they have 7, 8 or 9 on the color scale from wheaten marans. I have seen thousands of eggs from marans, and the darkest yet is the fluke 6 1/2 - 7 or so in the US. These are from the best of the best breeders of Marans. Do some have a different chart or are these "wishful thinking" 7s - 9s. You can see a lot of these photos are poor quality and not a true representation of the egg color. I would love to see eggs set up against the egg chart under high quality camera and lighting to see if they really are even close to the claims.

I know the best mine ever lay are the 6s and these are directly from the Teasdale line, which is known to be one of the darkest lines in general and closest the the French purebreds. My Davis aren't even close. Mostly 4s with a rare 3 and a rare 5 thrown in for bad (3s) and good (5s) measure. My 3/4 Teasdale 1/4 davis lay a pretty decent egg - always at least a 4 so far, but many are 5s.

One thing I can say about these wheatens - fantastic layers of round xlarge / jumbo eggs. Much bigger and better conformed than the Black and Blue Coppers I have (Davis and Wade Jeane).

It just seems wierd to me that even the French say most of the chickens lay 5-6s over there with rare 7s-8s. Talking to US breeders that know many French breeders, they say even most of the French have never seen a 9.

What gives? If people really have that dark of egg here in the US, what is the line and how does a person get them?

Each monitor is different and each camera shoots in a specific shade.

Egg shows are the only way to see who has the darkest eggs.

I have been following the conversations regarding conformation faults too. I hope that people find balance in the conformation and egg color, as both are important, but it is truly the egg color that makes the Marans unique.
