Pics
I found out just how hard it is to get an "accurate" picture of these eggs when my pullets started laying. The best background color, I found, is a light blue. A white background makes the eggs look darker, and red background makes them look redder. Both flash and direct natural light, as in taken outside on a sunny day, will wash the colors out. Try taking a pic inside, in a bright room with natural light, but not direct, and NO camera flash. Place the eggs on a light blue surface. I use the "Shop Towels" that are kind of a soft robin's egg blue. That is the closest I've gotten to portraying the "true" color of the eggs, even then there are slight variations. I'm no photographer for sure, this is just what has worked for me.

Hmm...there must be a different egg chart you are using. Those definitely wouldn't be an 8 or 9 on mine. On my chart, an 8 is dark chocolate, a 9 almost black.

I said they looked like 8s & 9s IN PERSON, the photo doesn't do them justice

I understand what you said, but there must be a different chart or something. The one I am looking at has 6 eggs on it - 4s - 9s and on the back, it has toe punch codes. From everything I have seen and the people I have talked to, all the reputable breeders say 8s, especially 9s, don't exist in France, let alone the US, and certainly not in Wheatens. If they did have them, they certainly wouldn't be selling them.

Case in point; here are two pics of the same egg, same room, same spot, taken with no flash. Notice how the white background makes the egg look much darker? The second pic of the jumbo egg on the blue shop towel. Still, the eggs are a bit darker than the lighter pic, but lighter than the darker pic...sigh

hmmm so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about...I'm learning

It should also be noted that eggs that have sat in an incubator will actually change color, turning slightly darker as well. The light blue does work to an extent, but if anyone has a glare-resistent lens for comparison of the charts to the eggs, I would love to see a truly 8 or 9 colored egg.

Where did you get your color chart from?? I've yet to get one, but would like to have an accurate one when I do!

I actually got mine from Laura Teasdale back in the day (years ago).

Here's a link to a similar chart, but this one wasn't scanned in very good so it is hard to see true color...Scroll down in the page to see. On my screen, the egg colors look much lighter than they do on the actual chart I have. I think at one time the club was selling these charts, so you may be able to buy one from there.

Yes, I've seen both of the club's charts, and I belong to the MCCU. Wish the Teasdale charts were still being made. I was thinking that had to be from awhile back when you said it had the toe punch chart on the back.
