Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I don't candle either unless I suspect a problem. I was told (ya know how that goes!), that Marans eggs aren't typically a problem when it comes to exploding. Their shells are somewhat thicker than most other breeds I've had, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that is true. I took one out of this batch that had developed a leak, candled, and it had quit around day 10 or so.

I haven't had one explode in the bator yet but had some real bad stink last winter and thought I had found the culprit which was oozing a little as well.. Took it out washed out the bator and that night I thought I could still smell something...so I had to sniff each egg and sure enough there was another one lol. They were shipped eggs.

Berkley what kind of incubator do you have?

ETA: I really should start candling so I can know how much humidity I really need to be using but I am going to get a different incubator (either buy a good cabinet one or build one from a wine cooler ..haven't totally decided yet) so maybe I will when I start hatching again this spring.

I candle at around 10-14 days and again before lockdown. It doesn't hurt the eggs to candle them. Why take the chance? And if I have a precious few eggs I'm not going to crack them open to check fertility and I don't want to wait till hatch to know if they are fertile. Besides, at least at lockdown, I want to know how many to expect to hatch. Don't want the hatched chicks sitting in there while waiting to see if a rotton egg is going to hatch.

If one explodes you lose everything in the incubator and the incubator needs to be cleaned and disinfected. I didn't candle for a couple years..........not until I had an egg explosion. I use an old 8mm film projector and that makes it very quick because the light is so bright.

We used to have an old slide projector I got rid of it a few years ago....now I wish I would of kept it

im sure i will lol ,,,, out of mabe 100 eggs i hatched no exploded eggs but im still young (50 ) and theres still time to learn the hard way lol lol

I'm old now, but I had it happen ONCE and that was when I was young. Once was enough for me and I have hatched tens of thousands of eggs now. One of my incubators holds 1500 large fowl eggs. I may never start that one up again, it makes the elect companies meter run so fast you can't see the dot on the wheel.

atts alot of eggs.that bator should have its own zip code , what do u walk in to check the eggs ? did u build your house around the bator ?.... welll i have a bacth in my incubator now a split hatch in a very small bator , good thing is its dish washer safe ,,, after next weeks hatch i will start candeling i guess . so walt what part of the country are you from ? hows the weather ?.
cold here in the foot hills of west virginia but not much snow yet , we are lucky if we get a few 8 inch snows a year
but last year was a kick in the head getting 4 foot ....
ps,, if your bator holds 1500
id hate to see your brooder lol lol
