Thanks sewandgrow, it sounds like you are seeing the same behavioral types in your flock? I "accidentally" got the hatchery cuckoo with a batch of Australorps from a local propagator. He called her a Barred Rock, but it didn't take me long to suspect Marans. When she started laying her eggs were terra cotta and often mottled. Not chocolate, but very pretty. I guess she could be called skittish, but I think of her as intelligent and athletic. I went ahead and got more Marans chicks because I loved her. I suspect the BCM type might not be as much our "thing" - they are reminding me of Australorps or Orpingtons, really very calm and stately. What I like about Digger the Cuckoo is though she is quick and lively (and has SUCCESSFULLY evaded a hawk 2x while I was in the yard), she is curious and friendly and loves to jump in my lap for treats. She is a great mama too and taught her baby to come for lap time.

The two wheaten chicks are now 3 weeks or so old. One has become extremely friendly and always hops on and climbs my arm if I put my hand in the brooder. She seems to like sitting on my shoulder and watching TV and will "groom" my hair. She has also adopted the youngest BCM in the brooder and sleeps with it under her wing. The other wheaten is also very friendly and inquisitive but may be lower in the peck order.

Would it be a mistake to keep the Black Coppers with the Wheatens and breed them? I really wouldn't mind finding a way to trade the BCs for more Wheatens anyway, but don't know if that is possible in our area. We'll see what I wind up with when they grow and start laying...next fall!

i am looking forward to people getting more wheaten marans .i think it will help spreed the gene pool,i did the same in my flock ,useing 2 different top breeders eggs....The flock i have,,,, has unrelated begenings hopefully,,,,, i do not think i mess the egg color in the cross of lines ,if i was to say ,,,, It got a littte better this off spring .... i even saved the egg shells of parrent stock on a pice of cardboard glued and labled it........ the thing lasted about 10 months and eshells lost all color........ So save many pictures of origonal eggs you start with
i think is important records to keep

Sorry, I am not the one to ask about mixing up the birds. I am pretty much a into "no mix" kind of breeding.....boring, I know....... I am going to try to hatch a few cuckoo Marans eggs that were covered by my EE rooster just to try for a few Olive eggers for the layer pen. All my other pens stay totally separated. BCM with BCM, Wheatons with Wheatens, Delawares, Light Sussex & Australorps all have their own pens. My biggest problem is trying not to want more breeds or color variations..............LOL That would mean yet more pens & more feed etc............... I am Soooooooooooooo tempted so many times......LOL. My grand daughters 4hers have me going around in circles looking at other breeds to hatch.......LOL

i went back reading and just found this , sorry i didnt see it befor .... i dont candle because eggs are to dark , i use a bator that i have no reason to ever open it .untill i pull out the chicks ,i think i do more damage to egg trying to see into it also i dont no what im looking for , i can tell fertility by cracking a fresh egg lol . walt warned me that if i ever get a egg to explode that will teach me i think i hit the 100 markwith this batch of eggs .... i got 16 eggs in lock down ready for wednesday hatch ,,,, i hope to get some more started early this year i should edit and say i do candle only to find air sack on round eggs

Just wondering if anyone with Wheaten Marans have noticed that the leg and foot feathering seems to be better than most of the other varietys ? I believe that the actual foot feathering is much better.

Yes!

As of yesterday I have confirmed with Lisa Cree that I'll be receiving 18+ Blue Wheaten Marans eggs around the first week of March.
I can't wait to have the little fuzzys out of those gorgeous eggs!
