Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Randy, Do you notice any lightening up of the wheaten on back and wing of the female wheaten get older say two or three years. It just seems like my adult hens are a little lighter than they were as pullets. I am just trying to record happening with the Marans. May not help anything down the road but kinda like to keep a record to look back at. I have done this with my Brahma bantams for at least thirty years and it seems to jog the memory. Don

Yes, my two year old hens seem to be getting lighter on their backs most of all. Almost like fading in the sun. They are two year old hens. I'll look up some pictures from when they were a year.

I think I told you before that I get some males that have white in wing and tail. I culled everything with white and will see if that works. The male I am using is a different line so will have to wait and see the results before I know if anything is going right. My female side is very good and were like that when I started but the male side has problems. Don

well,thats why i like all the rush of people getting marans we will have more eyes on the pie , but hay ,,, do your roosters take alot of time molting , my rooster still hasnt returned to clean black brest

and the brown spots on brest are slower to dissapear this second adult molt , are yours the same ?
he was all black last year

i edited to say i said it wrong , its not eye on the pie its eye on the prize but i do like pie ,,,,

At this point the jury is still out as this is the first new blood in the wheaten. The BC marans I have I have bred several different ways and see no change in egg color. I see some say it does effect the color though. I guess I have been lucky though as I only require my eggs to be at least a #6 on the scale. My wheaten and white both lay at least a #6 most of the time. Don

i have davis / presley lines and no egg color loss with tha crossed lines

Randy, do you find that the Presley wheaten are a little lighter in color, talking about the female. All of my adult wheaten are Presley. Don

i have a very small window of observation but i also noticed the presley line has a smaller body size then davis but thats just what i saw at least in the roosters , i had alot of presley roos and just a few davis roo to combare

So can someone on this thread tell me the traits I would look for in a good specimen beyond conformation... Some specific culling point for wheaton... The jumping off point...
