Hello all, When I get some wheaten hatched off will post pictures starting with the egg and go all the way to keeper or cull. I have a site set up and will post info. when I start getting some eggs to set, too cold here at present. There will be no single matings as I only have one wheaten male to work with, I culled everything else and just hope nothing happens to this one. Don

Don, or anyone else with experience trimming the spurs on the Roos, say the spur is approx 1" long, do you trim off just the point to approx 3/4" with the dog nail poppers? I believe if you trim too much, like dogs, you get into the quick? Thank you for the input.

Risa, yes just cut about a 1/3' off then, I always keep some sticks of chault on hand and rub into the cut spur even if it doesn't bleed. I have cut a lot of spurs as my dad had gamefowl all his life and this is the way we did the cutting. Don

Hi,
The only time I have trimmed spurs is when the spur is curving around back into the cocks leg or the cock is tearing a lot of feathers off the hens back when mating.

P.S. About a foot of snow since late yesterday afternoon and light snow still falling.

Randy, The genetic pool for white Marans is very small. They are not as good type wise as the wheaten. I would take on the Black but do not know anyone that has any that are worth working with. If any one has some that are not out of the BC or Blue let me know. Don

We have a general population coop with a few partridge Plymouth rocks, some Easter eggers some silkies not much more than 12 birds but its just for mixed birds , the wheaten I have in a separate coop for them and I have a separate grow out coop for newcomers(from my closed flock ) , my set up is very small , at full capacity I could take 25 to 30 adult wheaten Marans , but more comfortable with half that and a couple roosters and the rest of the room for juveniles or chicks .i like having the other breeds and mixed up birds but they are more of my sisters birds and she is a silent partner with the wheaten and every once in a wile will chime in on byc … she takes care of the chicken stock stuff , we went to a few last year , was fun , a great way to re-home a few birds …. We all know theres no money in chickens ,,, its more like a fifty year old kid with a lemonade stand lol the sugar cost more lol but it is fun to play but I am taking serious the breeding of the wheaten and would like to have good stock some day but it will take me years and i already have 2 years under my belt
