Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Pics
Thank you for responses! Now for clarification and more help:

1. ;-) I don't think of "culling" as "killing" - just thought that was really quite early for something like color, which is why I asked (and still want to know) how this happens?
2. Only have 3 Wheatens - looking like 2 boys and a girl (go figure).

- This is the one with the color in question:

- This is my suspected pullet:

- And the one I'm asking for confirmation if this is looking like a blue wheatie to you?

3. I had asked questions on the BCM thread about my 2 BCM's and only a couple of people replied - answering only one of many questions. [sigh] Then it was off in another direction. The Marans general thread is so huge I can't see the point of trying to post anything. It's hard enough reading posts without any punctuation or proper spelling, much less being ignored. ;-)

Hi, I believe you had only links on the other thread, you will not see many on the threads open a link to see what is there.

The last male does look like it is a Blue wheaten, is it supposed to be , or could it be ? Myself I do not pretend to be an English Major so what you see is what you will get.

When your thread is ignored is because no one has a comment, not because no one wants to help.

Most everyone here go on all three of the Marans threads. Ask your questions and will try and help all I can and will be truthful in the process. Don

Thanks again everyone..I've learned so much just reading everyones response to me

So if she is bread to a heavy leg feathered light wheaten..then the offspring would look more like wheaten marans..

Thank u again so much

Hi all, Just wanted to let everyone know that there are some wheaten breeders out there these days that have some wheaten that lay really dark eggs. I bought a dozen eggs from Wisc. last week that are extremely dark, will have to wait and see about the type and color, but really impressed with egg color. Don

Okay, here's a question to open another can of worms:
If Blue Wheaten and Wheaten are just one gene different, then why is the Wheaten hen wing color "wheat color" and the blue wheatens is "Outer web, medium shade of wheaten; inner web bluish wheaten stippled with brownish blue." on the proposed standard?

Wouldn't having brownish blue on wing primaries indicate there should be "brownish black" on standard wheaten hens? It seems that promoting that standard for blue wheatens would be to the detriment of any standard wheatens from the same line. How do you get brownish blue on primaries if your standard wheatens have wheat color wings?
Just asking.

This came up because Ilia talked about her blue wheaten hens on the main thread and stated that blue wheaten hens should have blue in the primaries. And Debbi was just talking about how too many Wheaten hens have black in their primaries. So which is really right?

VC, I am headed out the door at present but will comment when I get home. Bev Davis had stated that we should use the French Standard until the MCCUSA reworked the proposed USA standard, Later, Don
