Does anyone know the answer to this genetics question?
I am trying to decide if I should create my own blue wheatens or just order eggs depending on how long it would take lol.
My blue marans have a much darker egg color compared to my wheatens so I am thinking maybe crossing my blues in would help with the egg color in the wheatens as well.

sewandgrow...beautiful wheatens!

Hi Randy................he is not a year yet. I think Marla said he was a March hatch. I would have to check my notes. My original goal was simply a variety of dark egg for fun, Boy have I gotten off track.....LOL

Thanks Flgardengirl,
I found this thread awhile back & have slowly been working through the pages from page one & trying to keep up daily on the new posts. It seems I spend more & more time at this computer these days between the Marans thread, here & dark egg layers occassionally. That could be a good thing....It keeps me off of Ebay buying beads.......LOL When the weather is nasty I don't leave the house anymore than I have too & the computer is in the same room as the wood burning stove & TV.........can't get much better than that when I am alone....LOL

that would explane the short sicle feathers and the comb ,,,, it will stiffen up as he matures , nice looking guy

Good to know Randy. I started with this trio to add diversity to my egg colors & have a couple more juvenile pullets coming up too from the same breeder.

flgardengirl,
If you have a Blue Marans it is fairly easy to infuse the Blue gene into Wheatens.
First cross you can expect to get 50% of your birds that are Blue, & 50% that will be black.
Cull the Blacks.
Mate the best F1 Blues to Wheatens, you will get a mix of black,Blue, Wheaten & Blue Wheatens.
Again cull the Blacks & normal coloured Wheatens.
You can use these F2 Blues as above.
Mating the F2 Blue Wheatens with Wheatens will give you 50% of each.
When happy with type & egg colour, you can mate the Blue Wheatens together.
David
