Randy, I bet if you open the first wheaten female wing there is some form of black on the inter half of the feather. May not be real dark but some shade of black. Don

Going to be a nice wheaten female when she grows up. Open the wing up and see if she has black on the inside part of the feathers, does not have to be jet black. Don

She does Don. Her underfluff/undercoat is also darker underneath her wings, almost a gray color.

Would that be considered a fault?

Looks like it to me too.

Jeremy, these female with the light slate are what I breed when I am trying for a few males with the correct color, the males should have a light slate or gray under coat. Your female has a little too much of the wheaten bleeding into where it should be cream. Look at the first hen in Randys female pictures and see a really nice color female.

The Judge will certainly take into consideration the different shades of wheaten that will show up when judging. Some will like the lighter wheaten and some will like the darker wheaten. I found out many year ago to take more that one bird when showing so you will have a chance to have what is being looked for by the judge.

I would use your pullet as a breeder in a heartbeat. Don

Just a little on the wheaten. We are going to have most of the same problems with the wheaten that we are having with the Black Copper. It is going to take some single matings to cull out the fault producers. The only way to get rid of all the faults is cull the birds producing the faults. There will be no benefit to breeding the Marans throwing the faults if we are breeding to the SOP.

This thread is for the breeders going for Marans that will be up to the SOP. To have SOP acceptable does not mean you have to plan on showing them in a APA show.

If anyone has a idea on how to breed better Wheaten Marans or even Blue wheaten Marans why not post any information or question you might have on them. Don
