Ok next question is if I keep him, what to do with him as far as the girls he should or should not go with as far as breeding? I have 4 Cuckoo Marans & 1 Black Copper Marans pullets that are with Barred Rock, EE & Welsummer pullets. He's growing up with a Welsummer & a Wyandotte, not sure what it is yet. I don't want to cause anything odd if he's with the Cuckoo and Black Copper girls that I shouldn't...

Thanks

i had always thought to keep the bc away from the wheaten , i did read some were back that some of wheaten lines came from a sport thrown from a cuckoo from the kellerman line but i wouldnt mix colors , but if u are just in it for fun and eggs do what ever you like
if i were u i would make some olive eggers from the EE/wheaten corss for fun

Wheaten is recessive to both black copper and cuckoo. If you breed him to the cuckoo you will get sex links - the roos will be barred, the hens will be black with some gold lacing. They will look sort of like Black Star laying hybrids. Breed him to the black copper and you get black copper that carry the wheaten genes. They will probably have too much gold or copper color on them. You can get something that is more or less wheaten by breeding the offspring of the wheaten x black copper back to the wheaten rooster. When you breed them back to their father, you will get some chicks with yellow chickdown, these will be the wheatens.

Sorry to jump into the thread... awesome reading. My question is who would be a good breeder to buy from to get my flock of Wheaten's started? I bought some blue wheaten eggs which are in my incubator right now an d due to hatch next week. However, I have not had very good luck hatching shipped eggs. Also, would like to make sure I get quality to start with. Would prefer someone local or within reasonable driving distance to me. I live about 1 1/2 hours north of Seattle.

Rsarns, have you asked on the Washington thread? Pinkchick is closer to you but has BBS Copper Marans. Illia is in Forks. I know she hasn't been on much lately due to farming but there may be someone a bit closer if you talk to those folks.

I would think so. It's not even that important that you clear the hens from the previous roo, just that yellow legs gets a good chance to be over them. How many do you plan to hatch? Got my fingers crossed that it's just the one hen.
