were did you get ypur stock to produce roosters with no white in wings?
i have hatched at least 80 roo and got only a hant full with no white in wings . i haver never produced a rooster with white coverts. just cotton fluff i nevet paid much atention to the white in wings untill recently .outherwose i wpuld of saved one. in 5+ years iv only used one different roostwr breedin and never saved any . when i got started with wheatens i wanted tp improve egg color amd increse the flock of hens from 4 birds to 12 thats why i only used the origonal Davis roo that i still use tp this day

I'm not sure who you are asking this..... Our flock began predominately with Bev Davis line - and one little Cottage Hill hen. Could you please go to my pics a while back and make any suggestions as to what you think I should work on next ???? And agreed with earlier poster. Don't delete this thread..... I have many kinds of Marans but want always to have our Wheatens.... They are a local favorite and one of mine as well....If the feathering - I think you are call it coverts is beige or darker would it be allowable? And I'll appreciate suggestions you have with their continued improvement...I promise not to cry if there's a list to start on.

Thanks Don. The thing I love the most with Randy's hens, are the very crisp and distinct seperation of the colors! Not to mention their body type, WOW!

I do have a question on one of the hens. One has the black? striping in the hackles. Does this go forward easily if bred? It is not desirable or is it? DQ of fault?

hi deb. i have not see the black stupeling get worse. but i will go back ady look at pictures to see the change with age the hen in ythe last picture i posted is a five year old budy henery hen. . i have always used a bev davis rooster over budy henery hens. i think whan anyone talks about the lines of there stock they should mention a date. my roo came about 5 1/2 back... and dont worry deb if thos thred dies me or someone will open another and i hope don and outhers will join. im getting ready to start the incubator up big time. i need a roo with out white in wings i have created one or two in the past and will do it again with out new blood i hope and prey

Randy I have a difficult time getting my pictures the right size to really see I'll try again as I have 5 roosters and really don't think I need to keep them all.....

I hope everyone will look at the Back, wings and lower body color of feathers. The real light lower body as been taken out.

Randy, do you remember couple of year ago they were saying that the Dark back female should not be used for breeding look at what the Standard calls for now.

Nancy, the way to keep the threads from vanishing is to post as often as possible, as they will vanish if we do not post. I started this thread for the wheaten breeders to have a place of their own. For ages only Randy and myself were mostly the only posters on the Wheaten thread.

If you really want an opinion on your wheatens would be glad to give you and honest opinion of what I see. Don

I know I would like to see this thread continue. I've been quietly subscribed for the most part, but will chime in more often if it helps keep things going. So far this spring, I've had 2 hatches that included Wheatens from my own flock. I'm trying my hand at keeping close records of how many hatched and at what day (evening of the 21st, early 22nd, etc.). I've also been keeping track of what gender I believe the chicks to be and noting the number of days old the chicks were when I guessed. My first hatch this year was a small one. In that one, I had intended to hatch mainly Jersey Giants, so I threw in a few Marans for good measure. When I feather-sexed them based on the wings, I believed I had 2 females. That has held true as they're now about 19 days old and I can definitely see the female feather pattern emerging. My most recent batch hatched towards the end of last week. I set 9 eggs and got 6 chicks. One hatched very late (day 23). I was in a hurry and didn't clean out the incubator that morning before work and when I got home one that I'd thought was a dud had hatched. It did come from a nice, smooth dark egg rather than one of the stippled/speckled type ones. It's marked so that if it ends up a pullet, I'll put it in my layer pen. If it's a male, it's off to the meat pen because I don't wait to breed for late hatchers and have them become the norm. I plan to set eggs again for the Easter hatch-along and will keep records of those as well.

I sure do remember the comments about the darker hens my pictures ended up on the australian website for marans we talked about them having too much mahogany but I've seen first hand what happens when you use such a hen the offspring comes out looking like spotted or more like a btb. I've not been able to duplicate another hen like that using the exact same birds in the breeding it was just a thing that poped up.
. I'm definitely happy would be a collar that I'm producing in the size of the birds except for the black in hackles I'm happy with the hens oh and combe meed alot of work

I always toe punch mine when they come out of the incubator.
