Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

it looks kind of like a paper hole punch and what you doing to punch a hole in the wedding on their feet there's like 3 places you can punch a hole at so you have a many ways to mark them as individuals having 3 slots you can park 2 holes in the slot
I'm not much for math but there's many different markings you can do

I use a leather punch on Large fowl chicks. The punch that all of the supply store is small and you have to make sure you rake the disc that you punch out of the way or it will grow back. With the punch and slit method there are 80 different markings.

Excellent to see posts here again!!

I am in shock at the quick changes these WM make as they grow. Here is a pic of my favorite but goofiest and least SOP cockerel. I posted this 2 weeks ago when he was 13 weeks old. His breast was all orange.

Here is a pic I took today at 15 weeks old. There may be hope for him yet!!

Just want to comment on your male. He will be a good yard bird but I would not want to use him in a wheaten breeding program. Notice the black feathers coming in have real bad Shafting coming in also. Shafting is the quill of the feather being the wrong color. Don

Just wondering if everyone has noticed that the Wheaten Marans is not bothered with the Shank and toe feathering like most of the others colors. My Wheaten are very heavy feathered and have never had one with no feathers, feathers on the middle toe either. I just wonder why this is and expect that it is Genetic related.

Thanks Debbi, there is another one in my book adding the slit making 80 total for people doing single matings. Will see if I can get a copy on the scanner and post.

Don, they don't seem to have as many of the comb problems either, or do they?? I've seen some clean legged Wheatens on ebay, but for the most part they are all feathered.

Don't remind me as I bought a setting of eggs from ebay last year that looked real good and hatched six chicks, three had Carnation so had to cull all. I would say they have about the same problems, I would really be careful.

Randy, has about as nice wheaten as you will find to work with. Little comb that needs work. Color on the female is really nice.

Two year ago I bought eggs from Nivtup here on BYC, he had an ad on ebay. I used a male on my female and got some really nice wheatens. I set two people up with the wheaten so will get a few eggs later. Don

Oh yes, I remember you telling me you bought them! The last thing I want is more Carnations here!! If and when I get into the Wheatens, Randy is my man! I love his girls!!

don and u deb are just too kind. I'm so lucky to have never had a carnation comb.never had feathers on odd toes... my roosters need work.i have always kept the numbers low and a tightly closed flock ,i am not trying to have 100
id rather keep 12 hens and a roo or two and i have never added new blood but as you all know my roisters have white in wings and coverts. i am not afraid to post the faults my roos have. like a few pages back i posted the roos wing showing white. i hope it helps people to see . l hatch 60 or so a year and keep zero roosters and 3 or so hens .so i am small time. i have for the most part only used my origonal davis roo... i am excited to try a son from davis roo with to 5th generation daughters cant wait to see the off spring.

I think you're gonna freak out when you see my original davis rooster. the first 3 years he look fine nice coloring and that kinda stuff the first 3 years nice legs feather ring who is a decent looking rooster. but the past 2 years he is looking awful he has brown spots like dead looking feathers . he looks horrible now. but he is dady to all my hens except the 3 origonal hens. lol you all will freek whan u see how ugly he turned .i have not posted a pic of him in 2 1/2 years but i will this weekend. to me 5 years is old for a roo
