Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Randy, I recall reading somewhere, that is was a desired thing for these birds (Marans in general) to mature at a slower rate. It did have something to do with them laying a darker egg color too. Pullets that laid early on, tended to lay lighter colored eggs, due to the paint shop not being mature. Wish I could remember where I saw it, seems it was on BYC somewhere.

Budda ~ He is a nice looking boy from what I can see! Light slate would translate to light grey, and that appears to be what he has. More pics of him in different angles...please??

Nancy,

If you will post individual pics (or small groups) of the actual breeding flock, I am sure some of the knowledgeable people on here will be happy to comment. Based on the offspring that I have seen hatched from your flock, it appears to me that one or more of your birds is passing on some excessive coloring. (Maybe I said that altogether wrong, but red/buff or predominately red/buff roosters seem to be common.) I am making this statement based on my own hatch from your eggs and pictures I have seen from two other people who ordered your eggs. In the birds I hatched from you, some of the hens appeared to have extra melanizers. I have no idea what to look for in the breeding stock as the pictures I have seen of yours don't indicate a problem to me, but three out of three hatches with color issues means there has got to be something. Culler, Berkeleysprings and Village Chicken are all extremely knowledgeable and wonderful to help and I bet they could help you figure it out. :) I hope you have a wonderful evening!
Okay, I've been reading the SOP and thought I'd come in for some ideas on where I should concentrate improvements in the coming years.... This is an older photo. Some of these females I've retired...but please give me some tips regarding our basic flock.....I'll try to get some more pics when the weather warms up.....and when it dries a little bit. With the last onslaught of wet weather, it's all I can do to feed and water without falling down, don't want to bring the camera for a tumble!

and here's another view

The second shows the females better. Thanks in advance for your helpful thoughts....

Randy,

This is Angel, the little pullet hatched from your eggs. She is definitely the favorite of the bunch. :) I suspect that she is laying as I have picked up some eggs that look like pullet eggs in the hen house recently.
