Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hey guys, thought I'd drop in, it's been a really long time since I've been on BYC.  I've just hatched out a bunch of Blue Copper, cuckoo, birchen and BC Marans from Germany (well a few weeks ago they hatched) and I've got a project going with some Columbian marans that need to lay bigger darker eggs.  I saw there was some discussion about silver wheaten, and I'm expecting to get a few of those in the process.  I've heard it takes about 3 generations to get rid of the non-sex linked gold/brown/red that Wheatens or BC can introduce when crossing wheaten or BC to silver cuckoo, birchen or columbian.

Hi Deb, this may be an old question, but what do you do with your excess Silkie roos?  I've been tempted to start hatching some silkies, but I'm not sure I could handle the black bones and blue meat from the extra roos.  Right now I've got some wheaten bantam cochins growing out as broodies, but I've read the Silkies are the queens of brooding.  I'm hoping to lower my electric bill by using some warm mother hens instead of so many heated brooders.

Good luck on all your hatches.  Randy, are you all clear from the yellow legs?

Roger

Hi Roger, long time, no see!

So far, I've had no problem getting the excess Silkie roos gone. Pet quality I usually give away, if they are at least breed worthy I sell them for a fair price. I'm just starting out, so they go pretty cheap. I had asked that question about, hmmm, partaking of Silkie meat, and it started a hoopla on the Silkie thread!

But I did get a PM from a guy that does, and had some recipes. If there are any Chinese populations near to you, that's what they will want them for...just saying. I've got a couple of pullets here right now that are thinking of going broody. I won't trust them with any good eggs until I see them actually raise a family! Kind of ruined their plans on this bunch, as I had just completed a new pen so I could seperate them by color. One more pen to go for them, then it's on to the WHEATEN PEN!! Roger, you really need to get some, if for nothing else than the entertainment factor! These birds are quite entertaining and comical! They are also very good with children, even the roos.

Randy ~ I'm on day 12 romorrow, all is looking good so far, although I can't see squat in these eggs to candle...awww.

So far, the LG is cooperating, now if the coming storms are good to us, that's another question. Supposed to get some severe stuff over the weekend. I need to get some of those heat packs or Hot Hands for such occasions!! Post some pics of your babies, I need to bone up on what Wheaten babies look like. I'm so excited!!!

Mine are due to hatch Saturday! I am so excited! I put some in the incubator and some under a hen that went broody about the time I got them. I waited until she had been on a couple of days, pulled all of the original eggs and put about half under her. I am excited to see how they do!!!!!

remember debbie I'll keep sending you eggs into you scream uncle. also ilpost some pictures this weekend

Hi folks! I had thrown a couple of eggs into the incubator as part of the Easter Hatchalong, and one of the two Wheatens hatched out. It came from a nice, dark egg but looks like it's clean-legged. I'm thinking I'll keep it around because if it's a pullet, I may cross her with the cockerel I hatched in December of last year. He's got what I'd say is heavy feathering on his shank and outside toe, so that might work out to the light feathering they're supposed to have. Only time will tell, though.

i have said this befor and could be completly wrong but isnt the lack of shank feathering due to or caused by the shank inhiberter gene sorry about my spelling . and light leg feathering would indecate one copy of the gene . zero feathering would mean hen and roo carry a copy. and also feathering on feathers outside toe is a completly different genes than that of middle or inside toe. so what im saying is a marans withl ight leg and toe feathering should never get feathers on odd toes whan you breed to increse the amount. i have a few heavy feather leg wheatens and they never had feathers pop up on outher toes becausr i breed for more feathers thanks for any advice
