Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Yeah I guess so.,

To clarify, I was writing a local breeder of Wheatens to see if I could buy wheaten chicks directly from her. (someone famous in the Marans community – and she doesn’t live too far away) She quickly responded back, (nice lady!) telling me that she didn't have any readily available and I responded , telling her I would be happy to wait a month or so if she had any available by then. (I'm in Florida and I wanted to get some chicks local)
That line I posted earlier was her response. I just wasn't sure what was meant. Probably just a typo like you said, should I respond back or just leave it at that?

Hi Randy,
I had my best wheaten hen go broody on me at the end of last summer before I could hatch more than a half dozen of her eggs.
I have broody marans all the time.

It's best to separate them at night, you can move the nest usually with no problem.

I've moved some broodies after they hatch their eggs, but you'll have to mark her eggs so the hens don't lay more in her nest each day without you knowing. And you'll have to check every day to make sure there are no new ones - wear gloves!

They don't need much room, just a place to poop and for food and water. None of my marans hens have been particularly good mothers. They tend to bail on the chicks earlier than some of the better broodies.

Are these new hens that are broody on you? I thought you said you never get broodies.

I had 1 go broody last year she managed to raise 1 shack I only gave her a couple of eggs she was able to raise the 1 check with my main flocka morans the 2 girls are in separate nest boxes sitting on wall makes each. somehow my dooor rooster that I put it with my main flock has hurt him self badly it appears to be his right leg. so I put my old davis rooster back in with the main floc I have 5 more roosters replace him so I really don't care the trouble if it's gonna be 5 er 6 months before they're ready for breeding. so is a good idea to keep a couple of roosters handy you never know when you need 1
it's a minor setback off about 7 months

As you know, I have had some broodies this year. One is currently setting, one was killed with her babies by an opossum and the other lost her babies to an opossum. It was heartbreaking. We haven't had a predator problem in years, but some people are clear cutting next door and it seems to have caused an influx of opossums.

I'm considering moving the hen that is currently setting to a closed pen after the eggs hatch.(Currently, they free range during the day and are only locked up at night, but after the last disaster, I am thinking better safe than sorry... ) She is setting in the hen house, so she hopefully she will be safe until then. Her babies will be a cross of turken rooster (white with black tail) over wheaten hen, so they should be interesting. The hens here so far have been good mothers and I have been really impressed with them.
