when and who to process

ok so should I process 3 males now, and have them beside a different main course like eggplant parmasan, and just wait for the others to start breeding. the problem I'm having is my dh doesn't understand the whole concept of breeding and eating quail, I have to proof to him I can process them and that he might actually like the meat.... he doesn't think I can be callous enough to cut their little heads off and gut them, he doesn't believe i have it in me lol. (he never saw me plucking the ducks when I was a kid)

No, I wouldn't wait, the guys always want bigger and better. But your DH wants to know if you have it in you. Prove it to him. Personally I would process the 3 males and the smallest female. Have a wonderful dinner (now I'm hungry for eggplant, too). Then decide. That leaves you with 1M/6F.

Are they laying yet. I forget, mine usually start laying at 6 weeks and I like to wait until they are 10 or 12 weeks for the larger eggs, then hatch them. But you can hatch them as long as they are fertile. Collect eggs for 6-7 days and you have a nice size hatch to start out with.

Well, it would be a little expensive to mail it to you from Fl but if you pay her enough I'm sure she would at least consider it.

Oh yes, Rozzie, we sometimes have excess females. I have at least 15 excess females in my pens right now, in 3 different colors, too.

Ya, I think Fate is playing games with you and giving you males instead of females for the eggs that you want.

what else would you do if you had too many females, I suppose I could hatch out some more eggs when they start laying so that I only need to process males, if you want to take a ride to fl. you can have the girls I don't eat.

ROFL Running joke here. I own a rooster-bator, not an incubator...and I'm a vegetarian, so the boys are safe. They get to be pets. That means a lot of crowing around here while I try to build up my number of egg layers.

If you lived close to me, I'd sure consider snapping those girls up.

Only 15 hours or so of driving...

"Yes, officer. That is a cage of quail in the back of my car...."

rozzie maybe someone is trying to give you a hint bet if ya started eating the boys you would start getting girls, probably the only reason I got so many girls is I wasn't really planning to breed them lol or get eggs, I told dh we were having quail thursday and he asked me again who was going to kill them, I said me, he said yea we'll see, you can't kill a pet, if it were a pet it would be in the house with the dog, but trying to tell him they are meat birds is like talking to a wall, I finally told him what I needed all the cages for but I don't think he has taken it in.

Like I said, he is waiting for you to process.

My Dh did the same thing. He forgot my origins but he got a real quick reminder. And he doesn't mind because he likes meat better than tofu.

Bet he got a lot nicer too, after the reminder of what happens to roosters when they become "extras"
