what about a brown leghorn? ours are 12 weeks old now - and what do I have to have in place for them to start laying - hay or shavings in the nesting boxes

Just today one of our girls laid her first egg (woohoo!!

). I just counted and the oldest they can possibly be is 13 weeks and 2 days. I assume it is one of our golden comets.

OH GEEZ! I bought a bunch of chickens at Rural King this spring. I also ordered 25 from Ideal. So now we have a mixed flock of Black Australorps, Red Sex Links, some crested birds, some white birds and some barred rocks. Our girls are 13 weeks old today. Lately, I've noticed the roos starting the mating behavior and today when I fed them, at least two of the white hens (I don't know what kind they are) have gotten very red combs and wattles overnight! Why am I worried?

We haven't built the nesting boxes yet! I thought I'd have til sometime toward the end of August, but now I think I better get busy!

We finally got some eggs this week! We got 3 on Wednesday, 2 on Friday and 2 today. They are perfectly formed, but very small - smaller than small grocery store eggs.

The first 3 were laid on the ground, so we marked them and put them in the nesting boxes. The other 4 have been in the nesting boxes.

Can't wait for Sunday morning breakfast!

I bought my Barred Rock hens from Cackle Hatchery and I got my first egg exactly five months from the day I got them. But I have had some other hens go up to 9 mos before laying. There are a few factors that can effect laying age also,: time of year, proper nutrition, health, stress, etc ....
