This happens...

So long story short, my English White Coturnix have turned into a 'monogamous pair' which I've read can happen but is rare.

He really only has eyes for his lady.

I did used to have another female but he ignored her completely and she was kinda pushed away. Unfortunately a rat got her when they used to be housed in our aviary :hit

He originally did cause injury to her (Marsh) wing, but after I banished him to the naughty cage he seemed to learn his lesson. They now seem to be on mutual terms on when they can get down to business.

I'm not sure if anyone else has witnessed this with their Quail but the male will actually walk in front of the female, lie down on his front with his neck and head fully stretched out flat to the floor as if he's wanting her to do the 'job'. She then just squints at him and walks away...

I have no idea what they are saying to each other but they are definitely communicating in some strange Quail way.

I hope to keep a female chick and have my male Quail accept it but that'll be in a couple of months time. At least I hope he does because I want more eggs...

Anyways, meet the family!

Marsh did lay her eggs in a nest like area in her nesting box but I preferred to put them in the incubator.

All eggs are from Marsh and Mallow.

They are my first ever hatch and 6/6 eggs hatched! I think 100% hatch first time is decent?

I used the Rcom 10 Pro Plus incubator.

I'm not a quail fancier - just as well as they aren't allowed here - but my goodness baby quail that have dried off are adorably cute!

Oh wow I never knew some places couldn't keep Quail!
That's a shame...or maybe a good thing as Quail are addictive :D

I thought they would have gotten more poofy when dry but they certainly are adorable!

Yep
"Turkeys, ducks, geese, peacocks and other fowl species are prohibited."

Tell me what you like about quail, why you keep them?

Oh well that's something new I've learned today!
I can understand the Peacocks though, we had a cock and hen and gosh were they loud :hmm

As for your question, my parents had a mixed species aviary back when I was around 10.

I remember we had little Quail in there as bottom feeders. However, the neighbours cat dislodged the wire fencing and many of the birds got out. Unfortunately we then had to sell the Quail that were left as they didn't want to redo the aviary.

Since then, I've always been hoping to get some for myself.

Luckily, many house moves and years later we ended up with a bit of land. I went to an auction and saw a trio of Quail (the ones above except the other female Fluff was killed by the rat). Of course, I had to get them!

So times moved on and I've hatched their babies!

They are just such strange little creatures and I could happily sit all day and watch them.
