When do chickens molt?

I never understood why they add cat food. Its very HIGH in salt and chicken are not to have much salt

So, I now have had one molt at 8 months (Mother), then a different one (morticia) molt at 15 months (august), then she molted again in November. weird, I know. then Mother molted again at 20 months, a long slow molt. then I had Fi, who had a very hard molt at 18 months, very hard, wouldn't eat anything but meal worms I brought out to her to keep her alive for a about a week. Cluck-cluck had such a light molt, without lifting her feathers I would not have known she was molting. (18 months). And Goose, another light molter.

So I guess what I've learned is they can molt pretty much anytime they want, and they can molt light, medium, or hard. lol

Yep. I have had several 8 month old pullets molt this winter too. I guess they didn't get the memo that they were supposed to keep me in eggs this winter.
