When Do Hens Start Laying?/Share Your Laying Experiences

All of my chickens started laying right around 16 weeks, give or take a week or so. We have hatchery birds as well as silkies. But everyone started early, including the silkies. Don't know if it's something in the water or what but we were very happy about it. Even the ones we have hatched ourselves have started about the same time as the others.

I got my first egg from my Ameraucana when she was 23 weeks old. I had been so excited knowing they would lay any day now and she layed her first beautiful blue egg on Valentines Day of this year! It was the best present I could have ever gotten!!

I'm the mother of three little chicks- Beatrice, Keisha and Mackenzie- all five days off three weeks old. 

I was curious as to when they start laying. This is my first time caring for chicks and I'm raising them on my own. 

Is there a usual age as to when they may start laying? I read somewhere it was around 6 months and they usually lay an egg every day.

What are your experiences with handling hens laying, and any funny/interesting stories you'd like to share about your flock?

Sometime between 22 & 24 weeks they should lay, but the 'egg a day' delivery depends on the breed of chicken. Good luck in your adventure!

The color balance is so bad in these pics, it's hard to see colors, and as others mentioned, they're really young. Repost pics in another week; I'm really curious now! The very last pic looks a lot like a Golden Comet I have, who is slightly older than yours.

II had a black cochin frizzle and a silver laced wyandotte - both grew up and lived together and started laying at about 4 months....BTW the frizzle crowed like a rooster....

I'll be brief, since I feel like I've answered this question a lot on here.

Buff Oprington - Two at 28 weeks, one a 10 months.

Minorca - 26 weeks

Red Sex Link / RIR (not sure) - 22 weeks
