I would guess that she doesn't prevent laying, but rather she only breeds the birds who mature to egg-laying slowly. Most of the offspring will also mature slowly.

I see this is pretty old post but i was wondering... I just picked up a year old rooster and hen.. They said she still hasn't laid... I separated the rooster because he kept on trying to breed her too many times and just basically stressing her out completely. Well i have had her for about a week and i have yet to see an egg... I don't see anyway she could be a rooster... please help!!! My father in law and all live on the same land so we obviously share the coop he has 32 pullets a mix of breeds and i just have my two beautiful, very sweet cochins. He wants to just kill them to him they are no good. I just tell them thats ok they can be my pets! I am just so worried something is wrong with her. Maybe i need to just get rid of the rooster, but i am just so sad to even think of it. He doesn't even care of the others girl me assuming he knows they are of not age lol.. they are only 7 weeks old. Please somebody help me!
