Hi everyone,

A couple weeks ago we got a Svart Hona breeding pair. They are the sweetest! But we are debating hatching out some eggs, and so we were wondering when our hen will begin to lay. I can't find anything about it online, so thought someone on here might know. We don't want to hatch her first couple but are eagerly awaiting her first! Any advice will be appreciated!

They were 18 weeks old when we picked them up. That was probably about 3 or so weeks ago.

best info I've had is 6 months. I have a pair of girls that are 9 mos and laying. If yours are ~21 weeks, they should start laying soonish.

The pullet of my breed pair was not laying when I got her at 8mos, but that was in January. She began pretty soon and was also immediately broody. I believe 6-8mos is a safe bet, especially this time of year.

I find birds that mature over winter and begin laying in the spring generally have larger first eggs than the younger first-timers. That's anecdotal, and the hona eggs are pretty tiny anyway.

Good luck!
