When do you jump in and help a chick hatch... chick ripped intestines and bowel out of body.

That is sad ! Please put him out of his misery. He's not going to live, and it's best for your peace of mind and for the chick, to just quickly end his life. It's not a easy thing to do -- but the chick will never know what happened. I'd take it outside to a remote corner of your property, close your eyes and give him a quick, hard toss to the ground. Turn back toward your house and open your eyes, and go back and care for the dear peeps that are ok ! Do not help a chick unless it looks like it is breathing slower and slower. It can take 24 hrs. after pip for a complete hatch. if a chick seems to be in distress, take very small pieces off the shell, leaving the white membrane in tact. Wrap it in a warm paper towel, leaving the beak exposed so it can breathe. Let it rest for several hrs. before looking into more help. if you pull on the membrane and see blood you MUST stop. Let it rest for several more hrs. and check for bleeding again, and if the vessels have dried, pull back a little more membrane. Just remember -- any blood -- STOP ! I had to help a chick this morning. For some odd reason it never turned in the shell, and was trying to come out the pointed end. It couldn't do it, as there wasn't enough room for it to keep turning and zip the shell. This chick pipped yesterday morning, but was still breathing this morn. It's peep noises were getting weaker so I pulled small pieces off the shell like a chick would do during zipping. then I wrapped it in a warm paper towel, so the membrane wouldn't dry out. I left it rest for 4 hrs. and it still was not making any effort and it's breathing was coming in short gasps. So I started pulling the membrane back, but saw blood , so I stopped and left it rest for 2 more hrs. Checked again, and the vessels were dried up, so I pulled the membrane on back. It made a very weak attempt to push, which is how a chick gets out of it's shell. It still didn't come out, so I pulled the whole end off the shell, and left it rest. It was just to weak to push any more so after a hour rest I cracked the rest of the shell off of him. I was very scared that it wouldn't live as it laid there all curled up, breathing very shallow. I decided I couldn't stand there and watch it die, so I went and did some chores. I came back 2 hrs. later and it was creeping around and breathing just fine !! A miracle !! But beware -- helped chicks do not always make it. I also wonder if you are having heat/humidity trouble if the chicks are trying to hatch before fully developed ? Incubating is so nerve racking, but it is so-o- rewarding to get little balls of fluff in the end ! Best wishes on the rest !!

So sorry this happened. One of my chicks had a similar problem, but it only happened a few hours after it hatched out fine. We phoned the vet who said it's better to put it to sleep. So sad.

if you absolutely have to put him down i would use the vinegar and baking soda method... it seems like the nicest way to put him out of his suffering... i've read that it puts them to sleep first and then they stop breathing.. this thread goes into further detail.. im so sorry this happened to your chick https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...crippled-chick-vinegar-and-baking-soda-method

pleasepleaseplease if you put him down don't hurt him use the baking soda and vinegar method i said before its the easiest and nicest way at least then you know he wasnt hurt further before he was put to sleep. this makes me so upset to think about i feel so bad for the little chick

Put him down. I use a heavy pair of kitchen shears and cut their head off. Please dont let him suffer.

Thank you..... you completely answered exactly what I wanted to know..... I have had a egg or two this hatch peeping away for a day or two and never broke the shell... last peep was last night. I think it was not able to break the shell.... when the chicks hatched they climbed all over the eggs moving them.... I think it may be best next time to mark the top of the shell when I set them so if hatched chicks turn them I can quickly turn them back...... humidity is between 65 and 70 degrees... and pretty stable.... most of the eggs from that breeder hatched... did not check for clears... will do that when I remove them though, wish I had done it prior but I had plenty of room in the incubator so I incubated all of them. I had some marans from another breeder I wished I had candled... but eggs were so dark I just set them all and watched them all... almost all of them were clear..... what a waste of time, but the other breeders eggs hatched so it was not the fault of the incubation period for sure. He was kind enough to resend them... I will definitely candle these the whole way thru... I wanted to poke a small beak hole in the egg that was peeping for 24 hrs to insure it had air.... but I did not know if I should.... not it is not peeping at all anymore...

Next time I will trust my mommy instincts....
