When is killing a healthy hen the right thing to do?

Can't keep one remaining (healthy, egg-laying) very lonely hen. Which is the best option?

  • Lock her out of her run/coop and wait for a predator to get her.

  • Give her to one of the neighbors, who don't free range and have overpopulated, filthy runs

I am someone who has brought home plenty of unwanted chickens on craigs list. I believe there are good people out there that would give your hen a good home.
I have even had previous owners stop here and visit there chickens 2 years later.
You can make it clear to good home only. Take your chicken to them and check out the operation before deciding. One good look at there coop, run and condition of their chickens will let you know.
If you dont mind the long drive to the BYC member than do that.

Also, for anyone considering posting to craigslist, you can make it so you drive to the home (maybe first without the bird, then with the bird), to approve the home, similar to an adoption, if no money is changing hands. You can put in the ad that the person must talk with you, mere texting/emails won't get them your bird as well. Hope it all works out!

why not post on craigslist or facebook to see if someone with chickens will take her. Or look for a local sanctuary. I see no point in taking an animals life if it is not necessary as in your case. YOU took on the responsibility of the animal so YOU should take on the responsibility of re homing her since your circumstances have changed and no longer allow the time to take care of your animal.

I want to thank everyone for their empathy, opinions, and suggestions! BYC member Mr. Gargoyle put me in touch with his daughter's neighbor's friend's first cousin's babysitter's boyfriend's mom, and she is willing to give Little Stinky a whirl in her flock. We've scheduled the adoption for Thursday. I'll let everyone know how it goes. Again, THANK YOU for your support!!!

lol, that is a heck of a lot of people to have to sort through but I am grateful she's found a place.. :) should the deal fall through, contact your farm stores and you can also check with the local animal shelters, they do from time to time get farm animals,

that they'd meet a foreign-to-them pathogen or disease and be more likely to come down with it.
One reason why it's illegal to transport chickens and many other animals across state lines.

Glad she found a new home... and that you reached out for help! :highfive:

ETA: with some discernment, I have had 100% positive interactions selling chickens on CL including pics sent after settling in that very sweet and heart warming. Just because evil exist doesn't mean it rules... but misery loves company and people rather share their bad stuff too often. ;)

Little Stinky is now in her new home in the lower Rockies. Thanks to everyone who replied and voiced their support, and a special thanks to Mr. Gargoyle for finding a new hen-mom to take care of her.

As you can see in the picture (she's being protected/quarantined for a few days), she is already being scoped out by the rooster because she's sexy like that.
