When should I expect eggs?

:gigI remember doing this exact same thing the first time my new flock laid.....have done it a few times since too.....hard to tell alarm from egg celebration sometimes.

Yep, that's a first egg alright, kind pinky-brown. Congratulations! I have new layers born 3/10 started laying 8/2. 10 RIRs. Their eggs went from pinky-brown to some beautiful colors of brown/copper and one white from one of two of my Leghorns, she just started laying last week.View attachment 1531561
Thank you, it's actually more brown than the picture shows. I am not sure which girl laid it though, I have 2 barred rocks and the other 2 were supposed to be cinnamon queens but I dont know if they are or not. Regardless I am so happy that I finally got an egg because I have been checking 3 times a day, haha. Do you know why she would lay at 3 pm instead of the morning? Is it because it's a first? Another thing I am wondering about is the size, it is the size of a medium egg that you would get in the grocery store, so is that normal for a 1st egg? Thank you again.

With my limited experience (since this is my first year raising chickens) I can say that the first few eggs can be smaller, then they start getting to their "supposed to be" size. Thank goodness for the hens, right! I have noticed that my first eggs were lighter and as time goes by you can see from my photo that we get a variation of colors from 10 different girls. They are the best.
Usually mine are finished by 11 a.m., but a first timer and for a few weeks can lay any time of day. It seems that everything has to be just right for them to settle down and get the job done, the bad thing is, is that they don't know what just right is in that moment. I get one or two eggs at 7:30, then I check on them at 9:30 and then at 11. My last layer right now is my little Leghorn who just started laying last week at 20.5 weeks. She is laying in the RIRs nest, which they hate, so they run her around a little right now. We put a nesting box just for her where she sleeps but she will have not lay it, but does work on making a nest in it. We have eight nesting boxes and the girls have used three at most. It's funny, they make a line to get in their favorite two boxes and they help each other keep enough hay in it. I have gotten up to 6 eggs out of one box, all tenderly taken care of by them. They are my *itchie little girls!

It's so fun when you finally get those first eggs! The egg color will change (darker or lighter, depending on breed/laying cycle), as will the size -- they get larger as they mature. I have chickens that lay late in the day too. It takes new layers a while to get used to a regular schedule. You'll figure out who's laying soon, when they start singing the song of their people, loud and proud. We have a few who sing for at least an hour after they lay their egg.

Looks like uneven application of pigment or bloom....can happen at any age.
Is this normal for a first egg? I got them from TSC on April 14th this year and was told they were a week old or less, so I

I think it was one of my girls that I just uploaded as my profile pic. I was told they are cinnamon queens but I am not sure from looking at pictures. I have no idea what breed they are, but they are sweeties, very friendly..
