When there isn't money for nursery plants, where do you get your plants from instead?

If you need foundation plantings or half day sun bed filler almost anyone with hostas will give you divisions. I started with 2 plants and over the years of occasional dividing probably have 200 feet of them. They are tough and grow better the more you divide them. Different color varieties on sale are a good investment when you find a few bucks to spare.
Here are last years variegated divisions.

Two year old variegated and solid green divisions plus ferns someone was throwing away. 9x20 shade bed filled right up mostly free. View attachment 1400123
I helped my neighbor and she gave me a ton of hostas after I divided some for her. I also got a so many tiger Lillies and day lilies that I have a bunch to my grandparents. I actually had so many that I didn’t know what to do with them so I just planted them all in one central location and if down the line I want to add some to a landscape I know where to find them.

That's where I am at with purple lilac. Those things propogate like crazy and it's one of the few plants I have an abundance of, though I am starting to use them up. I am thinking of transplanting the babies just to have a stash for a rainy day. They take so easily they almost don't need roots when you plant them. In the Northeast, they say you can find hundreds year old foundations by looking for lilacs growing in the woods because they would have been planted around the house.

Since I started this thread, I have gotten some rhubarb, Solomon's seal, Myrtle, an unknown thing, and scillia from a relative. Dayliliies (the boring orange kind, lol), and nice variegated hostas from a neighbor. Found some lovely ferns tucked away in a not very visible spot and put them on display. I got all the spent narcissus from Easter that none of my relatives wanted to deal with. And found my $3 astilbe from last year has grown back, yeah! Very slowly establishing zones in the yard and trying to figure out how to plant full without creating a jungle for future years, or is that possible? I suppose I can always thin later.
Good tip on the bee balm!! Yikes, I almost let a chocolate mint have the run of the yard but decided I better not.

Here in the arid part of Colorado I struggle to keep things growing. Mint, lemon balm, bee balm are all hard to grow here.

I have small patches that I am nursing along.

Now if my spider wart would settle into its new spot........ It is just boring white but I like it.

I have just become familiar with spider wart recently, there are patches of it growing here. Are you able to grow grasses and succulents? Only a handful of succulents flourish here that I know of, but it's a treat when they do.

I can grow hen and chick succulents. I haven't tried others.

My big hens thought it was great fun to dig up the hen and chicks.

I really should go get new ones from the garden center.
I grew them in the round tray from a big pot. They did very well and looked pretty cool.

Grasses would get pulled out lol. I do have a few zebra grass bunches.

I planted some lemon balm years ago. Then it took over. Don't do it. I was forced to attempt to dig the roots out but it tunneled under my sidewalk. 3 years into the fight and I'm not winning. But I won't use chemicals so it's the hard way. Just say no.

That's funny. I have lemon balm and it is very well behaved. But, when I had spider wort, it went wild. I had to rip it out repeatedly, and swore that I'd never have it in my yard again, even though it is pretty.

That's crazy! I've dug every bed to 12 inches and finger combed roots out. It hid around the roses apparently where I couldn't dig. I take a hoe and scrape about an inch down weekly now. It comes right back. Sure smells nice but crowds things out. Considering planting it in the lawn for the smell when I mow!
