When to call it quits on these quails.

Hi y’all.

The Quailies:
I love them, I really do. They’re awesome when they aren’t going crazy on each other. There was a small scuffle between my male and a hen a few days ago, and no one was majorly damaged at all. They’ve been getting along for 2 days now, no issues noticed. UNTIL, of course I look in the corner of the quail cage and see my male shaking and puffed up... picked him up and both eyes are either missing(?) or swollen(?)
I'll likely cull him in the morning. :(

And the worst part is, IT'S ALL MY FAULT!! :he Maybe if I’d been a proper keeper I’d have noticed this happening earlier. Should’ve separated them the first time. Ugh. I feel sick over this and I can’t blame it on anything but myself. :th

This isn’t the first time a major injury happened. First time it was a cat attack. Argh.

I’m considering just giving up on quail keeping in general. Maybe that’s crazy of me... and I’ll likely hear a lot of "Wow so an incident happens and you give up??? You’re crazy!"... I already know it’s crazy. But they’re all fighting now and there’s no way I can separate ALL of them.:th

Don’t give upon him yet. I had just the same happen with mine just last week. I was convinced she had lost an eye with the state of her. Lots of blood plus she’s white so it looked even worse! Cleaned her up and I popped her in a cat carrier with food & water but put her back inside the aviary so they could all still see her. A couple of days later the eye was back open and another day she was back in with everyone else getting along quite happily.

I totally get it though with feeling like just getting rid of them! Mine bicker all the time and last weeks was the second real big fight they had. Unfortunately it does happen and it always happens when I’m not home.

@Yorkshire Coop thank you so
Much! Here are both eyes this morning... thinking they are gone :(

I wanted them for eggs. Which, they have provided, but they don’t get along. It’s usually the males that fight, but now the hens are fighting each other too...
Well, just like chickens extra males need to be separated or eaten. Not sure about females fighting, don't really know much about quail, but is crowding an issue?

From the top pic it does look like that one is gone. If he can’t see food & water will be an issue for him and make him weaker. I should have added that my eye issue was only the one eye so she was still able to feed & water herself.

Unfortunately the females do fight each other :( Both of the big fights I’ve had here have been female on female.

What is your cage situation like? E.g. how much space, how many males to females. Do they have places to hide from each other?

If this is a flock management issue, it should be solvable. You'll want to cull the injured bird and maybe some extra males, but most of them may be able to live safely with you.
